| In the debate on the nature of dissociation in the hypnotic experience, do the posters on this forum tend toward Bower's Dissociated Control hypothesis, or Hilgard's Dissociated experience hypothesis with regard to why responses to hypnotic suggestions can be percieved by the hypnotized as nonvolitional? |

Hi
This is going to fly in the face of this idea- there is NO such thing as dissociation- as everything related to any given reference- be that a fear or phobia etc-is still encoded with in the patterning of the brain, all that dissociation is a perceptual re-frame, the neurological memory of event xyz- is still there only now - with the so-called dissociation- things look, and feel different, yet all that happened is the perception of the event as been reorganized- so the neurological responses have changed.

Matrixman,
This is an intriguing position, will you elaborate upon it? I'm not certain I understand completely what you are getting at, and I want to. Are you taking the position that all experiences are encoded in memory physically in the brain and, once encoded, are there permanently? Dissociation is, theoretically, just a perceptual experience?

I will add to this yet as a process learning metaphor- if you grab a glass of water, and drink it, does the water stop existing? and if you would consider, the water to be an experience of some important event- what happens to the water after you drink it? in what other ways is the water being processed?
Can you remember a gift you got when you was younger? Can the remember the location of the desk you used to sit at in school? Can you remember any of your teachers names? What can you remember about the house you lived in as a child only remember the good things as you do that, do you remember your first kiss? all them questions require you to access stored already experienced events-

I am not of the psychology community so I cannot say I understand the true definition of dissociation other than split from some form of existence. Are you saying though-- in what you mention that conscious and unconscious splits only occur in association to an existing memory? And if that is true then how can you be enticed; usually by trauma to act in a manner you have never done before?
