Hello everyone. Newcomer here. But have been interested in hypnosis for a very long time now.
About 23 years ago, I listened to Barry Konicov's tapes. It literally changed my life. The first two tapes I listened to were the Self-Confidence tape and the tape on Concentration. It had an immediate impact on me.
I had lost my job and was very dejected. But, it gave me renewed confidence and when I did get a new job, the Concentration tape made me so focused that I literally did not see anything but the work at hand. It was scary. I still have the two tapes and do listen to it frequently.
But, have been getting bored with it and think that this might be a good time to invest in a "live" hypnotist! I have one person in my neighborhood who fee is about $325 for a two hour session. Her background seems very good.
My question, is that fee normal? I am looking to build confidence and to attract more positive benefits in my life. Also, does the hypnosis "wear" off after a while? Meaning - Do I need to go back every year etc?
Any and all help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

The fee you mentipn is on the high end. Your decision should be made based on many factors such as geographic location, experience, reputation, quality of previous.training and your emotional and intuitive response to the therapist. You may discover that several sessions are indicated which can mean a substantial outlay. First sessions can be longer than one hour, subsequent sessions are usually one hour or less.Average fees can range from $65 to !$150. A higher fee does not mean higher quality therapy. It can mean, "I don't attract many clients so I'll charge a lot to the few I do get". It can also mean, " I have superior training, long experience and numerous satisfied clients and my services are worth a higher fee." Check around by telephone and investigate before you invest. |

Thank you Mark. I do appreciate your feedback. I live in Central NJ and may be the fee is indicative of the area. But, I will check around and compare.
One thing the hypnotist assured me was that usually there is no need for a return. Also, there would be no tapes or cds etc to take home since she would give me cues that would trigger the appropriate response, when and as the situation demands it. As in before meeting clients or giving a presentation, etc.
The hypnotist seems to be certified by all the right boards and a long career. So, maybe her fees are, like you suggested, correct for someone of her background. I will definitely check it out.
Thanks again. |

Mesmer,
Cues will wear down over time. That is just the nature of the mind. How fast they wear down depends on the person and situations. One session fixes are nice when they happen, but it's just logical that more sessions increase the chance of success as well as stabilize the behavior.
A higher price can raise the 'perceived' value of what a business offers. But, it does not mean it is the best choice.

Thanks Patrick. I will keep that in mind. Still "shopping" for a hypnotist. |

The NY area does have a higher price range than other parts of the country. It comes with the location - location - location.
Do not underestimate the value of a dollar well spent. It is human nature to attach a value and importance on anything that costs more. For example, someone who gets a free (or inexpensive) stop smoking Hypnosis session from a clinic or hospital might be less likely to affix determination to it; compared to someone who spent $1000 on private sessions. Then again $1000 is relative; for someone who lives in a $20 million Park Avenue penthouse the $1k maybe wouldn't mean all that much.
It is a sad thing too because those who do the free (or less perceived value) sessions are more likely to tell others that they "tried hypnosis and it doesn't work." Therein giving them more verbal justification to friends and family (and themselves) for continuing the issue that they "say" they want to change.
I think, in most cases, if you make your financial situation known to any Hypnotherapist they should work with you on the fee structure.
In the end, in the grand scheme of things, a positive result is probably more important (although the individual Hypnotherapist may not see it this way) than the short term fees. As your positive word of mouth from a successful set of sessions would probably produce referrals and more business down the road.
Make your desire to accomplish your goal AND your financial situation known to the Hypnotherapist up front. Most will work with you. Also keep in mind that some sessions (weight loss, smoking cessation, etc.) may be covered by your insurance.

If your concerned about cost there may be "group" sessions near you.
For instance we have group sessions at the senior center for quitting smoking that costs about $5 per participant (this is very, very inexpensive) that is hosted by a licensed therapist.
However, you may prefer one on one help for your own problem.
Another long term option is to learn self hypnosis, which is essentially free, however it takes work (lol).

Of course the fee should be reasonable, however think about this...Anytime you spend money to improve yourself, it will always find it`s way back into your pocket with interest... |

I would do some general research about hypnosis before finding a hypnotherapist. You don't need to become a guru in the field of hypnosis but a little bit of understanding goes a long way. That way when you're shopping for a hypnotherapist, you can ask specific questions to see if the hypnotherapist can help you.
It's my personal belief that anyone still using a progressive relaxation technique for an induction is years behind in the field. I have met two "hypnotherapists" who used progressive relaxation techniques and I fell asleep during both sessions.
They assured me I was in hypnosis and that I would be fine. Fast forward a few weeks and no change was made. I was more than a little frustrated because even though I knew what I was looking for, I still got duped. |
