Is there a basis difference between the theoretical and theraputic approach of Milton Erickson in contrast with other forms of hypnotherapy?

Hi Peretz
IN what context?/ contextual derivatives control the frames of how any intervention works- everything is theoretical until it is contextualized. no context no frame work.

There is also Dave Elman. He has a good book titled "Hypnotherapy". I know Amazon.com has it. Different methodology with more advanced techniques. Also more rapid results that are easier to reproduce. Living legends Gil Boyne @ gil-boyne.com and Gerald Kein @ omnihypnosis.com also teach this style of hypnosis.

Hello All, You can receive the Elman book much faster from the publisher, since Amazon must order from them. --westwoodpublishingco.com My book "Transforming Therapy" details my methods and is available from the same source. With Respect to All, Gil Boyne |

patrickg,
Can you elaborate on why Elman's technique is more advanced and achieves quicker results?

Peretz,
Sure, and first I'll explain the basis for my opinion -
I've done over 1,500 one-on-one hypnosis sessions. I track every single client for short term results, long term results, client experience satisfaction and some other things. This is unusual in the profession. Most hypnotists do not know their real success rate. Based off of results, rapid (not instant) inductions and direct/advanced techniques provide better, more reliable and more consistent results.
Elman techniques are more direct in dealing with an issue. I have been able to address even the most grisly, difficult PTSD trauma in 2 sessions. It creates change very quickly.. this client started sleeping without medication the first night and eventually was able to stop her anti-depressants after 30 years of use. Another woman I saw on a Friday. On her follow-up appointment on Monday, I asked what differences she noticed. She said "I didn't feel like killing myself. I thought about it like I always do, but I didn't feel like it. You're not going to get that kind of change with a progressive relaxation induction and word games. (hypnotists work under a doctor referral with such issues.)
Also, while each and every client is different, Elman techniques are much easier to duplicate from client to client as it is more adaptable. Erickson techniques can become very convoluted and unreliable in how they will effect two similar clients.
While there are some instances where Erickson techniques are more appropriate, Elman techniques more consistently provide my clients with better results. I suppose I could get more detailed in my explanation, but...
I gravitated toward Elman because it works. I can see the difference in my clients. This is important to my business because most of my new clients are referrals from past clients. The happier my clients are, the more referrals I get. I started from scratch 3 years ago and am now full-time in a very conservative town with a poor economy and only 150,000 people. This is when other hypnotists in town are having trouble.
Giving you more detailed explanations may not make sense if you are not already familiar with both, but let me know if you would like any more of my opinions :)

Hello Patrick, I am pleased to hear of your good results from the use of the Elman techniques and philosophy. It is the best selling (world-wide)hypnotherapy book currently in print. There are also CDs and MP3s of Elman teaching available at westwoodpublishingco.com With Respect, Gil Boyne |

Gil,
Thank you very much for the encouraging words. I am proud of that. It has taken hard work building a reputation and respect within the professional medical community.
I refer to it as Elman techniques to keep it simple. But really, it is the people that have taken Elmans' philosophy and add to it, moving it further forward. Like yourself. I've read your book, "Transforming Therapy" as many times as I've read Elman's "Hypnotherapy".
So, thank you for that. I feel a little cheesy going on about it. Enough said.
As a side note: A woman in my town was taught hypnosis by you, I think in the late 70's or early 80's. She is now in her mid to late 80's and is still practicing hypnosis out of her home. She talks about her classes back then with great clarity.
