I am studying hypnosis with some Hypnosis training CDs. I am practicing the basics, reading inductions that I wrote into a tape recorder and listening to them for self-critiquing. One thing that always jumps out at me is that my tonality and my trance voice do not sound "natural." Can anyone recommend anything other than continued practice to get a handle on this stumbling block?

Some hypnosis instructors recommend acting classes. For myself... If there is a script I wish to record or use, I memorize it and speak it in a human sounding fashion :) Speak with calm emotion, like you really mean what you say. That will resonate with the listener.

Hi One thing to consider is to go to google video and do a search a Stephen Brooks- he has about 8 full length client sessions on there- it would be a good thing to watch one or two of them- and watch a real master at work-

You shouldn't worry about your voice too much. If you ever heard Dave Elmans voice you'll notice it sounds like fingernails on a blackboard. When the client is in trance they do not focus on the quality of your voice but on the information and direction you're imparting. It is true that if you can add appropriate emotion at the correct time it impacts the subconscious mind more powerfully.

If you ever listen to Gerald Kein's voice you'll notice it sounds warm and emotionally involved/engaged. Most of what I've learned is from Kein's videos.

I have taught thousands of students and monitored the practice sessions. Many times I have seen subjects who had difficulty entering trance go into a deep trance with a very unlikely practice partner.
The voice quality is a relatively unimportant factor. The connection is made at a subconscious level.

I'm brand new here and this topic has always held great interest for me, so I hope no one minds me throwing in my 2 cents even though the thread seems like it's been tied up.
I do think that a comforting vocal tone and cadence can make it easier to slip a subject into trance. Perhaps it has a greater effect on some than it does on others. I've always been told that my steady, friendly alto is a contributing factor, but I also believe it's in the rhythm with which I speak. When I'm on the receiving end of a trance, I definitely have an easier time slipping under to the sound of lower tones - and I believe that's why I've always tranced better with male hypnotists. Higher sounds sometimes annoy me, as do people who talk too fast, and I just don't think it's possible to relax when you're annoyed. :o)
