I need help to figure out why I can't take suggestions in hypnosis. I have read and watched a lot on hypnosis, and know quite a bit about it. I have even hypnotized other people, but for some reason, it seems as though I can't be hypnotized. I definitely feel like I am relaxing a lot when I go to do it. I can even go along with guided imagery quite well. But during the hypnosis I feel as though I have ADD or something, and my conscious mind keeps thinking. And whenever the hypnosis recording comes to any sort of suggestion of physical movement, or physical feelings, or triggers, or other such things, either it doesn't work, or I think its working and my heart rate increases rapidly and I don't end up following the suggestions. I sometimes follow the suggestions, such as arm raise or the number game, but I definitely feel that my conscious mind is still deciding to do it, but making it seem as though it is not, and my heart is beating hard the whole time. From this I have only been able to suppose that I am not yet deep enough into hypnosis to attempt these sorts of things, that my conscious part of my brain is not "turning off" for some reason, and, though I can think of none, that somehow I still harbor fears of hypnosis. Now, if someone were to ask me, do I have fears of hypnosis, I would say no. I think its really cool and interesting, and I would love to experience it. But for some reason it isn't happening. So I was wondering if anyone had a good idea why, had seen this before, or knew how to help me, short of advising me to chuck up a lot of my money to go see a professional hypnotist about no real problem. Now, in a similar vein, if this may help, whenever I am going to sleep, I can never go to sleep knowing that I am going to sleep, it seems to only happen without my noticing it. For example, if I am up very late and for some reason am having trouble sleeping, though I am very tired, if I feel myself falling asleep, I pull myself out of it with my heart beating. Also, my parents don't approve of hypnosis. Generally, I ignore my parents on a lot of things, and even though they were pretty emotionally afraid of it when I hypnotized my sister, and they forbade me from ever hypnotizing anyone in the house again, I didn't agree with them at all and in fact got very angry with them. Now, I don't agree with them, I even tried to give them the pre-hypnosis talk about how safe it is, but they wouldn't listen. I definitely do not agree with them, but has it somehow gotten into my subconscious? And the sleep thing, am I really subconsciously afraid of giving up "control"? I can see the benefits hypnosis would bring me in my life, and I want it to work. I just don't get why it doesn't. |

I forgot to also mention that I do have a very analytical mind, a very analytical mind. But I have also tried confusion, attention grabbing, inductions too, such as the 9 things to concentrate on one. |

Oh, and if the problem is in my subconscious mind, how do I go about fixing it if it is the thing stopping me from using hypnosis, and hypnosis would be the best way to fix it? |

Why do you stop short of the absolutely best way to experience trance and receive the gift of self-hypnosis? You could save up to see a Professional Hypnotist/Hypnotherapist and benefit greatly thereby. Just pick the best one for you. |

Because I am a minor and under my parent's authority for at least another year, and probably longer, (I do think I am a good child.) I don't feel like waiting that long to go to a hypnotist for a ridiculously expensive hour session that may or may not be able to fix a problem I could probably fix on my own, that I want to fix on my own. |

Hi Rindill
The so-called problem is nothing to do with your subconscious mind- its because you are thinking to much- give yourself permission- and let go- one way to do this is to listen the the hypnosis session a few times- with out any intention of going into trance- so you and hear what's going on- then once you have done that you can say- to your self ok I know what's coming up- and it feels safe- to allow my self permission to go along with the journey-
so as you think about giving yourself permission- I don't what you to think about being successful in being able to go inside and do deep trance- with easy- now just don't think about enjoying the experience and don't think about learning new ways of going inside-
just as a side note- check out- www.paulmckenna.com if you look on the left hand side you will see a link to a free hypnosis download- you might consider giving that a try- as it uses hypnosis in a different way- one that you might get a different result with-

Right, I figured as much, and have tried that... in fact, I probably have a lot of these self-hypnosis tracks memorized. I guess, I'm trying to figure out where to "let go". Because obviously I have to use my conscious mind to follow their directions, but if going into trance is "letting go" after consciously following their directions, then how do I know when to "let go" and "ignore" the track? I try "letting go" but I end up just sitting there and the track plays out and nothing happens. And every time the track gets to one of the tests, a light goes on in my head that says, "Is it going to work finally?" And I feel anticipation and I look for the suggestion to occur without me doing anything. But then that just happens, I don't do anything. And I wonder, "Wait, is that my problem? Should I be doing it? And then I do it but it doesn't feel like the suggestions say, it feels like I am doing it consciously, which I am, I guess, so then I open my eyes and am like, "it didn't work again." |

It might open up away of going into trance- it's a common, ploy use with good success when you have people who seem to think to much-
what I suggest- is not to listen to any hypnosis stuff- for the next 30 days- don't read any hypnosis stuff- and just take a brake- from hypnosis-

Okay, I'll try that, but from a purely intellectual point of view, I'm confused about the role of active thought in hypnosis. Like, to imagine, you have to be consciously imagining right, or wrong? To relax, you have to consciously relax your body. Etc. Hypnosis is talking to the subconscious. when does the subconscious kick in and the conscious turn off? |

To be honest- there really is only one level of mind- which is consciousness- we just have foreground i.e thing's we are aware off- and background things we are not currently paying attention too- both phases are always active - at the same time- we are always relaxed yet we are also holding on to some level of tension- at the same time-
what makes the difference is in how we use- our five senses to create powerful experiences- it's not just about words- it's how the words allow us to use be guided into useful states- the one thing that audio programmes don't have is the ability to calibrate- and lead- the experience -
ask your self this question- if you was to have the very best hypnotic experience how would that be? answer this to yourself- in as much detail as you can- what would you like as a result from that experience and again in as much detail as you can- answer this to your self- what would you be seeing- feeling and hearing- and what results you enjoy most out of that experience- and again answer this only to yourself- and in as much and as vivid as you can-
