Question: If I come to you for therapy and you convince or allow me to believe (eroneously), that the route or cause of my difficulty was, that I was run over by a car when I was young. Would this cure my problem or would it simply mask it leaving the cause undiscovered, and therefore not dealt with and the problem just changed?
I believe that we often base our sulutions to the problems based on eroneous causes ( i'm afraid of horses because I was bitten by a horse when I was young, or in a past life I was shot by a French soldier).
I feel that often when we have discovered the unconscious cause of the clients difficulty, what has happened is that we have discovered the acceptable conscious (eroneous) cause.
If we deal with this, mind over matter comes into play and the individual appears to have made a positive change.
Unfortunately this cure must be temporary as the cause is still unresolved and will now find an alternative symptom to let the person know there are/is unfinished business.
Our therapy was only partially successfull.

I have been wondering about this one... a calculated guess that 'you know' what someone's problem is. That is if I read you right?! Well, maybe what appears to be the problem isn't anyhow. What may be 'the problem' is only the surface & the 'real problem' is hidden. Often, in my own life I don't what the problem is until it has become a problem. But, " if someone says something is a problem, you'd better believe it."
A client who had come to quit smoking had a conversations with herself under her breath during the first session. I asked her what had happened. She looked bewildered for a moment then said, "I saw a light far away." I nodded & waited. Then she said, " no it wasn't a light it was a foetus." She was a nursing sister in her 40s. Finally, she said, "it was my brother." She had been born a twin & her brother had died at birth. Her father had often said that her brother should have lived. That he was more handsome & more intelligent.
We had 3 quit smoking sessions & she rang to make the 4th appointment. I asked how it was going & she replied, " no good." I kept her talking. "Well, since you ask, I haven't been smoking in the house any more." [She wanted to be a good example to her teenage daughter & her friends.] ... "I have been smoking behind the shed.... Yesterday I went out to have a smoke & I saw the lawn needed mowing so I mowed the lawn.... When I came in I made a cuppa... Do you know what, I forgot to have a smoke." I repeated that key phrase." YOU FORGOT TO HAVE A SMOKE.You are almost there." She said, " but you opened a can of worms with all that stuff about my brother." I told her, "you can stuff that all back where it came from & forget that too. If you are still smoking this time next week ring me up." She hasn't rung. That was 5 or 6 years ago.
