In the UK the terms hypnotherapist and psychotherapist are often used almost interchangeably. There are no real grounds for this practice and it is misleading to trainee therapists and the public alike. Although there are areas of overlap there are major theoretical and practical differences between hypnotherapy and conventional psychotherapy.
In brief, the main difference between hypnotherapy and psychotherapy is that the primary emphasis in hypnotherapy is on the subconscious levels of the mind. Traditionally, psychotherapy systems have focused mostly on an intellectual understanding of problems, hence the label talking cure or talk therapies as psychotherapists themselves have called them. In psychotherapy the subconscious is conceptualised differently and used differently (usually very indirectly if at all) compared to the dynamic and creative use of the subconscious in hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapists make use of the conscious reasoning mind but are trained as specialists in using the great subconscious resources for powerful effects on mind and body, hence the amazing speed and degree of change that can be achieved in most cases.

Hello
My name is Pam Mills and I am the director of The Denver School Of Hypnotherapy and I would like to say that I agree with everything you have said, however, the state of Colorado considers hypnotherapists to be psychotherapists. In fact, we have to register with the state as unlicensed psychotherapist and are required to follow the state regulations and laws of psychotherapy. |

Hey Mark,
The terms hypnotherapist and psychotherapist in the UK have the same meaning and in general the same practice.
Very few hypno anythings actually hypnotise sadly. The vast majority get a slightly relaxed state and then psychotherapise.
I think the sad thing over here, and aparently from what I read in your fine country also, hypnosis and relaxotherpy have come to mean the same thing. And that is sad.
And just for clarity in the UK is that there is no legislation for either approach. The only law concerns stage hypnosis.
