hi im 18 years old and suffer severly from panic attacks. I am currently on my second session of hypnothrapy to try and deal with them , but im not sure what im meant to feel like while being hypnotised. To me it feels like im just sitting in this chair with my eyes closed while he asks me questions about what might have triggered them off. He then goes on with some positive suggestions about not panicking, but this is only for a few minutes. |I find it really difficult to relax while being hypnotsed and wondered if this affected my ability to be hypnotised? is this really going to have any affect on my panic attacks at all? what kind of affect can it have?
any answeres would be really helpful!!

Hi Annabelle

Hypnosis is one of those things where there is no real way to say what it feels like, as each person is different, so therefore, the way you feel about how you are feeling when you are in trance, depends on how you are feeling at that moment, as long as you feel safe in the way your hypnotherapist is working with you, than just go with the flow.

General rules! Feeling relaxed, calm, rested, light, heavy, warm, cool, and time distortion is a good indicator i.e. if you feel that only a few minutes have gone by and it's really 30-45, then you've had a good session. If you want any tips other than what your hypnotherapist is giving you then e-mail me any time.

Hi Annabelle

No it doesn't matter about time distortions , it's just one of many thing's that could happen, If the change process is done well, then it will be done out-side of your conscious awareness, and just integrate in to your life, you will just feel calm and confident, and that's how it should be, it's when your conscious mind picks up on what's going on, that's when thing's slow down, a little, so just give your self permission to go with the flow, and your change will happen the best way for you.

So let me ask you a few questions: If your panic attacks just went away, how would that make you feel? and if you had this new better feeling how would that feel? how would your new found confidence sound and look like, what would happen if this change happen when you was a sleep, and when you woke up you just felt wonderful, what would you like to feel like instead, make a list of all the good feeling you could have instead, and just for a little while each day, feel your best more and more, and without knowing why, you just start to integrate your new found confidence more and more, and you can choose how good to feel, for all the right reasons, can you not?

Just image that it's ten years since your last felt panic, and before you new what panic was you new how to feel good, already before you new how not too, now and take your new found confidence and place it in a time before you new how not to do anymore, not now not anymore and just feel your best with out knowing why.

If you are still having truble after more than six sessions, give me a e-mail. Matrixman

i just came back from my third session and he seems to think i dont need any more, he thinks im 'cured' for want of a better word. how can it just switch off like that? he said beware of having aftershocks where i may feel anxiouse but not as bad and that these will eventually dissapear. How do i go about testing whether or not im better? i seem to be worrying about not having anxiety and how strange it will feel - how stupid is that?!
im sorry im asking so many questions - you must get the same questions all the time!! its just such an unknown for me!

Hi Annabelle

First of all well done on finding help, so many people, let their fears, overwhelm them for far to long, now I trust that your hypnotherapist knows what he is doing, and three sessions is a good number to be done by, I think the way I work is a little different, as I would test my work, before we finished, yet saying that I don't know the way your therapist works, or where he was schooled, and not meaning to come across as a big head, I work on the base the if there is know change there is no fee, so I am at my best all the time, other wise I get hungry, anyway getting back to you and your wonderful questions, changes in the way we learn happens fast, it's a bit like watching a movie, if you watch one frame a day, over a number off week, months, or even years, then you will lose track of what’s going on, yet, if you watch the same movie all at once, it just flows, and that's the way change happens, it should happen with out you really knowing that is has happened, in a smooth manner, with out to much fuss.

Testing this should have happened already and if you read my last post a few more times, then there is an ecology check built in, just think how would it feel, sound, and look different with this new confidence? On a number of 1-10 how good do you feel? And how much better could you feel? if your at a ten add one. Anyway if you need any more advice my e-mail is on my profile.

Hi Annabelle
Sorry to hear that you are still having your panic attacks, So I am going to ask you to try a couple of thing's that have worked with people I have helped over the last few years.

First thing though, you need a paper and pen, write down all the times that you can remember having your panic attacks, and pay attention to the different ways you feel.

Next write as much as you can about all the times you have felt really good about yourself. once you have done that get back to me and I will give you your next task.

If it has consciousness it's already in a trance.

hi Annabelle,
Like matrixman said i applaud you too for getting help. I have suffered and i mean suffered from panic attacks for years. At first i just tried to "getover" them. Then i tried to "plow" through them. I went to many therapists spent thousands of dollars over the years on them and medications. Nothing seemed to help It has ruined many a potentially great experiences in my life. Recently i went to hypnotherapy and it has helped a lot. I know what you mean about worrying if they are gone and worrying if they will come back. That is the nature of the panic disorder. It really is a horrible nightmare. With a broken leg people know whats going on. But with panics sometimes people dont even notice. Yet within you it is a truly living hell and overtakes all thoughts. Hang in there. Dont do what i did and let it go for years. Keep reaching out and get help. sooner the better. I would try several therapist until you feel really comfortable. Try a School that teaches hypnotherapy and ask for an instructor to hypnotize you. Good luck. You are in my prayers.

In addition to hypnotherapy, see a physician and ask for a prescription for Prozac. It can help you tremendously with panic attacks. In our passion and zeal, we must not forget that we are
Complimentary to the physician and not Alternative.

Dear Annabelle,

Hypnosis is not a therapy by itself, it is a tool which can be used in psychotherapy to significantly accelerate and deepen the therapeutic effects produced by the psychotherapeutic approach it is used in conjunction with. And, it can be used productively with all types of psychotherapy.

Avoid drugs as much as you can, drugs will just block temporarily the secretion of the chemicals (neurotransmitters) that are involved in the manifestation of your symptoms. However, you will have to pay the price for this temporary only symptom relief. This price are the serious side-effects that can sometimes be as bad as your problem.

My suggestion. Find a properly qualified psychologist specializing in the treatment of phobias and panic attacks. It would be an additional boon if the psychologist were also trained in and practiced hypnotherapy, many do. Today, there are many well-tested psychological therapies that deal very effectively with panic attacks and produce definite and measurable therapeutic outcomes.

Be sure of one thing, your panic attacks can be eliminated and will be eliminated if you seek the appropriate therapy provided by the appropriate professionals.

Just go for it and the best of luck.

I would hold onto the idea of relaxation as being your overall goal. The problem with panic issues is that relaxation is blocked. It can be uncomfortable to feel relaxed or be in hypnosis. So your difficulty in getting relaxed is to be expected. I would let your therapist know and ask him if he can help you to relax with hypnoanalytical or regression techniques. Psychotherapy in hypnosis is what will change your hypnotic experience as well as help you move past your anxiety.

Regards,

Jeremy

I understand panic attacks...well not really. I know how a panic attack feels. I have had to deal with the most of my life. What it did for me for a while, is I would try to melt into the wall so as not to gain attention. Then one day a long time ago, I decided ..."this is crazy" to be afraid to be recognized,or someone would call on me, or I would be the focus of a conversation. So I started to put myself out. It was not easy. I took a "self-hypnosis course and it helped. which is to say I relaxed and imagined good results from what ever the situation was.

I would call it practice. I practiced, practiced, practiced. I would make myself get up and give a speech. I would take leadership rolls with groups. Getting really good at something so I would be recognized as a professional in the field and talk to groups. You get the idea. In time, I had significant improvement. What happens today, Two things : 1) I get excited with the opportunity of speaking to others and want to share my idea. 2) It still scares me. But once I get started and I see the world is not going to collapse on me, I sail along.
I hope you understand what I am saying. The victory is going to be yours, and so is the will to get over having a panic attack. Hope this helps.
