Hi all,
So i recently started getting into hypnosis and learned a quick induction technique where I have the subject stare at their hand as I hold it up then as it gets closer to their face, suggest they close their eyes and sleep. Then I immediately put them deeper and deeper into it.
After I learned about this induction technique, I finally got enough confidence and to try it on my friend. I'm going to explain EXACTLY what happened and I need to know if my subject was hypnotized, if i did it correctly, and what I did wrong, etc.
It was relatively late at night when I told my moderately to very drunk friend that I had a method in mind to help him concentrate on school work a lot better. He was willing and I told him to sit down and relax. Next I asked for his hand and held it about 2 feet away from his face suspended in the air.
"I want you to look at your hand. Look at the lines on your hand, now begin to focus on one single spot on your hand. As you look at the spot, you're going to begin to feel your hand pulling closer and closer to your face." ( I began pushing his wrist very very gently towards his face until he began doing it on his own) " Now as your hand gets closer to your face, you'll notice that your eyes will start to change focus. And when they do, you'll now close your eyes, (I watched as they closed) and sleep! going deeper and deeper now deeper and deeper. You're feeling so good, so relaxed now, so safe and secure, going deeper and deeper now into this nice feeling of relaxation. In a moment, I'm going to ask you to open your eyes, and when you do you will no able to remember your name. It will be as if your name is completely wiped from your memory. No matter how hard you try to remember your name, you won't be able to remember it. From now on every time i tell you to 'sleep' to will go instantly back into this state of relaxation. OK now 1,2,3 eyes open wide awake"
As soon as my subject woke up, he laughed and stated that he in fact did remember his name and said it out loud, then he laughed and stated that he didnt believe in hypnosis.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. I am completely inexperienced when it comes to this
2. My subject's eyes seemed to be fluttering during the hypnotic state
3. I tried telling my subject to sleep again and it failed
4. I certainly felt as if my subject was truly hypnotized until he laughed and stated his name and his disbelief in hypnosis
5. At no point in time did i tell him about hypnosis or that thats what i was going to do in the first place
6. My subject at the time was pretty drunk

| It appears your suggestions didn't work, but I would say you did everything completely right. There are many factors involved in hypnotising someone, including the relationship you have with your friend, his mental state, i.e. intoxication, as well as his own hypnotic style. If you hypnotised me like that, I would be hypnotised, but you would be hard pressed to get me to forget my name using hypnosis. Next time, I would try something a little easier to forget, such as the day of the week, or a number. These things are more forgettable. However, it always depends more on your subject than you. |
