Hi there,
I've been practicing hynotherapy (mostly PLRs) professionally for a few months now since having been certified. I have a couple questions for anyone who's experienced in working with clients...
1) What is the best way to keep the client from falling asleep? If you tell the client as they begin to enter the semi-somatic state that they won't fall asleep or are not to fall asleep (through direct command or embedded messaging), will it work?
and
2) What's the best way to keep your own scripts from effecting yourself? What I mean by this is that I tend to start following my own relaxation commands and sometimes start to get sleepy during a session. Is there any way to prevent this or is this just something that happens and something a practitioner has to get used to?
Any input would be great. Thank you! |

Oh yeah, one other thing... I've had a few clients get up and walk around while in hypnosis. Should they be told to lay back down or is it okay for them to pace around while semi-conscious (so long as they're not falling or anything), or should I just allow them to experience the hypnosis as is, even if they are walking around or pacing? |

Hi, I think that you might think about not using scripts. While the client might become sleepy during hypnosis, and feel like they might have been asleep, there should be a difference between being actually asleep, and just in a deeper trance. If they are actually falling asleep, it probably means the concept of hypnosis employed is not engaging. Deep trance should be more of an intense experience. The more intense the experience, the deeper the experience. I would do away with the scripts, have a clear framework of psychotherapy that is scientifically proven, and think of hypnosis as the best state in which to integrate this therapy. I, myself, have taken an Emotionally Focused Therapy pathway, which is a little like Gestalt, but more modern. But even from Gestalt Therapy there is much to learn about how to do good therapy in the state of hypnosis. That might be a starting point.
Best wishes, |

Regarding the pacing: That might happen. I've had clients do that, but I would just continue on regardless. You have to use your judgment there, as each case is so different.

Hi Indigo,
"1) What is the best way to keep the client from falling asleep?"
On the practical side, are your client's laying or sitting up? Sitting up will decrease the possibility of falling asleep.
The second thing goes to what Jeremy said. Let go of the scripts. If you are reading a script you are not seeing your client's unconscious signals. They will show you if they have drifted toward sleep so you can interrupt it before it happens. Calibration is an essential skill and is much easier when you don't have a script to worry about.
"What's the best way to keep your own scripts from effecting yourself?"
You want to go into a trance when working with clients. This doesn't mean eyes closed drifting away type trances, this is more of an uptime relaxed state.
This is where the idea of going first comes in. You and your client have something called mirror neurons. Their job is to take into physiological information from other people and create the same activity in your brain. For example if you see a friend pick up a glass, the mirror neurons in your pre-motor cortex replicate the "picking up glass" neural program.
When you go into trance first, your physiology mirrors to your client how they should respond. They see the unconscious signals of trance and their mirror neurons begin to create the same experience.
So enjoy going into trance with your clients :) This will increase unconscious rapport.
Cheers! Jess |
