I find with Weight Loss, plain jane hypnosis is only slightly effective for the very motivated.
There's usually an underlying cause or a secondary gain which keeps one from losing weight, after all every diet works IF YOU STICK TO IT (no cheating there).
Secondary issues involve .... well ... if they lost the weight ... there would go the excuse not to find a relationship .... or .... it may be a protection issue ... keeping them from being sexually attractive.
Or the biggest I've come across ... is with incest or abortions in women's lives ... Guilt ..... and other issues.
Best to do a non-directed regression to cause .... Then ... INFORMED CHILD ... and reframe the SSE's on the way up .... the Secondary Sensitizing issues.
You can learn about this work from all the major hypnotists - Gil Boyne, Gerry Kein, Stephen Parkhill or Mark Cunningham. If you don't take care of the underlying problems, you may only have short term success in the weight arena. I learned that after doing 20 years of straight hypnosis before I started incorporating REGRESSION and Forgiveness strategies. |

John, I have no problem with any of your post except that first two lines. "Plain Jane hypnosis?" sounds like you are describing, or trying to describe what a neophyte might do, not what would be done by any experienced practitioner. The rest of your post is spot on though it does leave out many other aproaches a practitioner might use after the intial interview to define cause......Anyone who doesn't do a prescreening interview is not worth going to, and certainly not worth paying.... |

Without doubt, hypnoanalysis/regression work is necessary to effect lasting results, with most clients.
But I do like to address concerns at every level.
I think it's important to have a casual conversation to engage the intellect and be sure a client knows the basics of healthy eating. If not, I ask them to seek assistance from a nutritionist or find a good book on the subject.
I then think it's important to discuss behaviours, and consider practical steps/changes that can be made to reduce the chance for relapse and to build self-confidence through the completion of moderately difficult or symbolic tasks.
And I also think there's a lot of strength to stock-standard plain Jane hypnotherapeutic techniques as well. I really do. They give excitement, hope, and an initial momentum, and when combined with the above they can lead to the formation of lasting positive habits. I have made the mistake in the past of downplaying the importance of intervention at this level, considering it 'superficial' hypnosis. But it's not. It's as much a valid part of the whole as any other, and with a client willing to really engage the session and who can work with me to bring out their own answers it can be a very profound experience.

John makes some good points, and my take on the plain Jane comment is that he is talking about direct suggestion. While it can be beneficial it's not the best long term approach when dealing with weight management when that5's all you do. If you were to see the client every week until they reach their goal, and perhaps provide a CD for support it might work initially. The problem is that after they get there, if they have not dealt with the primary cause of the weight gain, they'll end up in the same condition that your run of the mill diets place you in, right back where you started, with a few extra pounds added in for good/bad measure.
Using regression to cause and dealing with the real problem is more effective than direct suggestion, though it doesn't hurt to include direct suggestion, and many times the client expects this, so it can be an important addition to the process, though it needs to be part of an overall comprehensive plan! |
