Posted: Thu Feb 17, 2005 8:11 pm Post subject: The Secret of Instant Induction
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A word is as real a conditioned stimulus for man as all the stimuli in common with animals, but at the same time, more all-inclusive than any other stimuli.-—!. Pavlov
"The Word as a Physiological and Therapeutic Factor" Foreign Languages Publishing House, Moscow, 1959 . Soviet psychotherapy has developed under conditions entirely different from those in other countries. It is built on a basis of dialectical materialism, teaching the unity of mind and body, and the determination of consciousness by the conditions of life. It has discarded the idealist conceptions of foreign psychotherapy (Freud, Adler, et al) which misinterpret the theory of neuroses and their treatment and the methods of psychotherapeutic aid. These conceptions muddled the idea of the nature of neuroses and their treatment to such an extent that these problems long seemed insoluble.
In our 45 years of successfully using psychotherapy, we have done all we could to stimulate a more extensive elaboration of the theory and practice of hypnosis and suggestion; we have also done our best to pass it along to others .Familiarity with these methods is important not only to psychoneurologists who are treating neuroses, but also for physicians in all other branches of Medicine because any somatic disease is indissolubly connected with the activity of the patients' nervous system. We intend to emphasize that medicine has four basic therapeutic methods: drugs, surgery, physiotherapy, and psychotherapy and that suggestion therapy runs through all the other therapeutic methods.
The image of objects and actions expressed in words and ideas replaces their specific effect on the organism. The word is really far from immaterial to the human organism, In many people it is possible to provoke, by purely verbal influence in the waking state and especially under hypnosis, reactions which often causes doubt or disbelief. . These phenomena include verbal suggestion of a hypnotic state, the experiencing of various suggested emotions by the subject in hypnosis, the rise of suggested disorders of sensitivity, the execution of unusual acts (for example, eating an onion as if it were an apple.
Pavlov's theory of higher nervous activity has been able to explain how the word of one man can exert an influence on the processes of the higher nervous activity of another man, what suggestion, autosuggestion and suggestibility really are, what their role in the life of man is, and the pathogenesis of some diseases and their treatment. Suggestion made under hypnosis can accelerate intestinal peristalsis, cause a dilation of blood vessels or premature menstruation. These responses can never be done voluntarily.
Any word as a stimulus is immaterial to man until a conditioned reflex between this word and some on conditioned stimulus has arisen in the cortex, thus, the sound of the word "hurts" acquires a definite meaning for a child only when combined with real pain at least once. Only after this, can a corresponding conditioned reaction to the verbal stimulus "Hurts" be provoked and it will reproduce precisely this conditioned pain reaction.
The word "sleep" can put the cerebral cortex of man into a state of partial inhibition corresponding to the state of suggested sleep , during which considerable endocrine and vegetative changes really take place in the human body similar to those that occur during the transition to natural sleep. There is a relationship between the conscious perception of speech and it's suggestive influence. Verbal influence perceived critically cannot be suggested, because It is perceived consciously and actively. .On the other hand, verbal influence perceived passively without criticism, easily becomes suggested, even though it may contradict past experience and be severed from present reality.

Wow! This is really interesting. Are there any similar sources to this that expound upon it in a modern way? |
