Hello,
I would like to know if anyone here who has his or her own practice got started. If it's too much to say here, please send me a private message when you get a chance. I always appreciate wisdom from those who've made it there.
Do you work from home or an office? How long did it take to become active? Would you say you make a descent living at it? What's your advice to someone starting out? Do you offer any seminars, workshops, etc? Do you belong to any associations, affiliations, etc., and have they been any help?
Thank you for your time. |

Josh, why not just put up a few quick tips here? I think that is the purpose of the forum, not to market your own completely free "future" web site. |

Here are a few very inexpensive "bootstrapping" ways to promote your business from my experience in marketing and business in general. I was in the Marketing business for many years before I became involved with Hypnosis. Hope these help.
Business cards - one of the most important things you can do when starting up any business. Small, compact, inexpensive and easy to carry and distribute. When you find yourself in a social conversation and the "Hypnosis" topic comes up it is almost guaranteed a business card will come in handy.
Almost all your best business is going to come from Word of Mouth. Once you get a client and have some level of success they will tell others about you and your practice - however it never hurts to remind them of just how helpful that would be to "help you out." People always like to feel they are being helpful.
Give your clients a few of your business cards - put "referred by (their name)" on the back of the card. Optionally; offer them a discount for each referral or give them a free session after a set amount of referrals, or something along those lines. Some clients will do this just so you will see their name come back to you on the cards. Remember to thank them when it happens as these people are your best spokespersons.
Get some small card holders/displays from your local office supply store. Ask local business and retail shops in your area if you can put out your small display of cards on their counter near the check out area. You will be surprised how many will be happy to help out. Places where you frequently shop are very good but really any local shops will work: Health Food stores, Chiropractic office, Beauty/Nail Salons, etc.
Flyers - Many grocery stores and diner/sandwich/coffee shops have a wall area devoted to local business when you can post for free. You could post a business card there but unfortunately the first person who is interested will most likely remove your card thus ending your exposure. In these areas if would be best to create a simple flyer (don't try to say everything on it - keep it simple) with some tear off tabs at the bottom or side of the page. The tear off should have your phone number and just the word Hypnosis (or your business name, if it is short and also says Hypnosis in it). Here again don't try to get too wordy on the tabs. When you go to post these flyers always carry your own push pins or thumb tacks as you will be surprised how many local boards are short on them and frown on people using staplers. When you post them put a few up at the time, one behind the other - this way when the tabs are all gone from the top page the next page behind it will be showing them. Stop in from time to time to replace the flyers. I always found that by putting a up a bunch of extra push pins/ thumb tacks on the board area reduced the chance of people taking the flyer down to "use" your pin to put up their own flyer. The pins are so cheap but not having your flyer up could end up costing you a lot more than the cost of a few pins in lost potential business.
These are a few very inexpensive "bootstrapping" ways to promote your business. Once you have some clients from these avenues you can begin to cultivate your "Word of Mouth" referrals and soon you will be able to move into other areas of advertising.

I have a studio where I practice hypnotherapy, massage therapy, and naturopathy. I have had my practice for 10 years although hypnotherapy is still relatively new compared to the others. Some advice I can give you is to always emphasize the benefits of what you offer rather than just what you do. If people here that you are a hypnotherapist, they are left to determine for themselves what you actually do. If you tell them that you empower them to change bad habits, lose weight, or stop smoking, they immediately see how you can help them. Also, I see business cards as a mini ad and in any advertisement you should have a call to action. That is something that makes them want to make an appointment right now. Suggestions might be to put a coupon or "free offer" on the back of the card.
Another thing that has worked for me has to offer group sessions for a topic. For instance, I may offer a group hypnosis session for weight loss. This group session would be offered at a discounted rate and would be very general. Then I package the group session with 1 or more individual sessions at the regualar rate to customize it. They get an opportunity to see what you are about. This relieves any inhibitions toward you.
The last thing is to offer a free seminar at the local library on the benefits of hypnosis. The library will promote it for you and all you have to do is to offer an hour of your time. There is a good chance that you will get some clients that way. Hope this helps. |

I started my hypnosis office almost 3 years ago. I've learned a lot the hard way and learn more every week. You can make a living with some hard work. It will take some time to build up a reputation - that's where most of my clients come from:
54% professional and client referrals 10% phone book 12% website 11% presentation / health fairs 3% from the sign outside my building
results may vary :)
I suggest finding a clean office space with good visibility. Adds rapport right away.
Business cards w/ a your picture on it is a good thing. Hypnosis is a very personal service. Seeing your face adds some trust.. Given you look trustworthy :)
Look in your community for health fairs. Contact local medium to large company HR people, they sometimes have health fairs. Can sometimes find free ones or sometimes a small charge.
Give local business HR people your cards/brochures etc..
Focus your marketing materials on the commonly acceptable - quit smoking and weight management. Of course hypnosis can do more than that, but you'll be wasting your breathe for the most part. You'll have a better return doing what the public is more accepting of at first.
Track your client's success rate with follow-up contact. This will help you develop your programs by knowing what you may need to improve.
Focus on results. You sell your client results, not the process.
Hope that is helpful.

HypnoDoc, I really like some of your ideas...especially one I hadn't thought about. There are a lot of businesses that know me well and would probably not mind sharing my business cards and what I do. Thanks for sharing. |

Ah Wisdom -
JoshSinger - that is great that you have been at it for four years. Just a few things bothersome about your post:
"Does a doctor pass out flyers?" (Don't think anyone mentioned passing them out - they can be posted and they don't even have to say the practice name - just Hypnosis and a phone number is fine.)
"Does a doctor hand out cheap, self-printed business cards?" (What makes you assume everyone would hand out cheap, self-printed cards? I don't see where that was suggested. By the way most Doctors do have business cards.)
"Does a doctor see patients in his living room or home office?" - No one suggesting this either.
Bootstrapping doesn't have to look cheap nor give off that impression. In the end, for some people, starting off slow without a lot of upfront capital investment may be the best thing - especially those who are not quite convinced they want to go full-steam-ahead as yet.
If we value independence, if we are disturbed by the growing conformity of knowledge, of values, of attitudes, which our present system induces, then we may wish to set up conditions of learning which make for uniqueness, for self-direction, and for self-initiated learning. - Carl Jung |
