Posted - 01/19/2010 : 1:37:24 PM Hello all,
I'm in no way a hypnotist, nor have I ever actively attempted to hypnotize or give a suggestion to someone's subconscious. All I've done up till this point is read.
My wife and her sister are attempting to learn how to swim in their middle ages and have failed thus far. I believe the reason for this is due to their phobia of water and drowning. I am going to take them swimming this weekend to see if I can impart in them some confidence.
One tactic I have is to make a suggestion to them that they are not afraid of the water, nor of drowning. Below, I'll go through what I believe I should do to accomplish this. I have 2 ideas, one using NLP, the other inducing a trance. Please critique them.
NLP: One on one, I'll ask each of them to think of a point in their day when they are the most relaxed and describe that situation to me. I'll ask them to think of being in that relaxing situation and concentrate on the feeling inside their body during this. I'll mention how they also feel "safe" in this environment. While they are doing this I'll touch their shoulder, saying "feel how relaxing and safe this is".
Next, I will ask them to come back to reality (we will be in the pool doing this, I'd imagine) and think about dunking their heads in the water while holding their breath, and remaining under as long as they can (this terrifies them, and should be easy based on our environment). I'll ask them to concentrate on the feeling inside their bodies that comes with this emotion. During this time, I'll say, "Concentrate on this feeling inside and be aware that it is there. Imagine now that you are relaxed and safe" as I touch them on their shoulder.
I guess I would continue to enhance their relaxed and safe state at this point, but this is as far as I've gotten.
Trance: I'm less familiar with putting someone into a trance or speaking to their subconscious. This is off the cuff. I aim to move them into a confused state before implementing my suggestion. I will start a simple story of someone overcoming fear utilizing 2 sentences meant to confuse their cognition, "He wasn't afraid of the water is fine" and "He overcame his fear didn't affect him". Thinking about it more, I don't know how confusing these will be to the cognition, as each sentence currently conveys the same meaning, so I thought of interrupting the story to have them quickly recite their phone numbers backwards.
Either way, once they appear confused I will snap my fingers and say, "Don't be afraid of water", snapping again and saying, "Don't be afraid of drowning". Based on what I know of suggestions, while these lines contain the negative, it still contains the lines "be afraid of water" etc, so I'm not exactly sure on this part of suggestion.
Any help with this will be very much appreciated. We're a little desparate to get these ladies, so I'm ready to try someone drastic.

I appreciate your assessments and figured as much. The topic in general seems a little over my head at this point and I'm consciously aware that I don't understand the dangers involved, so I've decided to teach them to swim in a non-manipulative fashion (just getting comfortable in the water). |

Posted - 01/19/2010 : 2:37:58 PM Hi
You have no place doing this, water is and can be very dangerous and you need to be very competent, not only in being able to use NLP/Hypnosis yet to have an awareness of the type states you need when working in different environments, one of the last things you want someone to be when their new to swimming is relaxed, another thing you don't even have a basic idea of how the process of negation functions, Don't think of a pink drum, don't think of a yellow man, "Don't be afraid of water" = Be afraid of water.
You have no place in this environment and you are potentially going to kill two people. now you might think, I might be over reacting, yet sometimes some people don't have the skills needed, and from this post your one of them.

Posted - 01/19/2010 : 2:34:18 PM "I'm in no way a hypnotist, nor have I ever actively attempted to hypnotize..." - Then why have you decided to use Hypnosis to deal with this situation?
"My wife and her sister..." - Most all Hypnosis Professionals stay clear of working with friends or family in their sessions. So I would suggest that you don't even try this and instead find yourself a trained Clinical Hypnotist to work with them if you think Hypnosis is the best way to deal with this.
"I believe the reason for this is..." - Hypnosis is not based on what you believe but instead on the mindset of the person being hypnotized. There needs to be a consultation session before any Hypnosis work begins to do the discovery groundwork.
"Any help with this will be very much appreciated..." - I don't think anyone in here will offer you advice on how to deal with this, given the manner which you have chosen and the fact that you are untrained.

Posted - 01/19/2010 : 2:27:10 PM Also.. working with family who KNOW you're new at hypnosis is also NOT in your favor...
So.. with all that info.. it's still worth trying. :) |

Posted - 01/19/2010 : 2:26:04 PM How effective ANY suggestions will be, whether from NLP or hypnosis trance, is dependent upon the strength of the behavior you are working AGAINST.
In this case you are working against a fear. If their fear is weak, suggestions can have some impact. If their fear is medium... suggestions may have short-term impact. If the fear is strong, suggestions will bounce off.... like a BB gun shooting at Kevlar.
If you consider... a strong emotional state IS hypnosis.. when they are in a fear state, their mind is giving them suggestions... "I am afraid", "I'm scared" "I might die"... whatever... but the point is.. that is also hypnosis.. giving suggestions to BE afraid.. you will be working against years of this reinforcement.
