What is the effectiveness of using dreams during and after hypnotherapy in the process of intergrating and internalizing new material suggested overtly and covertly during the session? How and under what conditions are dreams applied in a theraputic context?

Hi Peretz,
Working with dreams can be an effective way to gain insight and achieve transformation. I highly recommend 'Become the Dream' by Randal Churchill. Instead of trying to interpret or analyze the dream, the book demonstrates the use of Gestalt methods applied to dreamwork. The following quote will help explain the philosophy. (No, I'm not getting a commission on this.)
"Your dreams are metaphors for your existence. They are even more than that. Your dreams are direct messages that express your subconscious experience of yourself and the world. The Gestalt perspective of dreams is that every part of your dream is a part of yourself . . . By becoming the part you are taking back the power of the part."
Also, sometimes suggestions are given that the client will have a dream between now and the next session which will be relevant to their current situation. The dream can then be used as a starting point for the next session.
