when doing self hypnosis, what could be the tests to check if you are in a hypnotic state or not?
Uhm, the ones I know are catalepsy and arm levitation. Are there any others that could be done yourself that are relatively indicative of hypnotic state? |

Posted - 03/17/2006 : 11:53:43 AM I will try to say differently what several knowledgeable therapists have said here already. In my opinion, hypnosis is simply a name for the trance state. In this state, the cognitive processing of ideas and self-instructions, work against the development of more profound responses. As the subconscious opens to become more responsive, the activity of the conscious intellectual mind diminishes. You continue to activate your conscious mind by demanding proof that you are in hypnosis. I have sold many thousands of self-hypnosis tapes (I started with LP records in 1955) and I have taught self-hypnosis classes to 22,000 people in my career. Listen to the experts! Go to a professional hypnotherapist who will train you and will use tests to convince you of your hypnotic response and will teach you how to program your creative subconscious mind for results. Money comes and money goes--money can be replaced--wasted time cannot be! You have been sold a faulty idea that everyone can learn to hypnotize themselves simply by using a cassette or CD. Wrong! some can and many can't. Your frustration and reluctance to accept answers from experts will remain until you make a new decision. Whatever your decision, I wish you success in you goals. Posted - 03/17/2006 : 06:04:51 AM I believe you are mistakenly concentrating too hard on the idea of being hypnotized" instead of learning how to relax without conscious thought. Thinking too hard about wondering where you are at or in what stage of hypnosis will not get you to the subconscious mind. Practicing the technique of going through the critical bypass from conscious to subconscious mind will be easier if you would not focus so much on, if you are there or not or the other pre-conceived thoughts you are having, to distract your attention in slipping into the relaxation state you are trying to accomplish. In other words, clear your thoughts and let the mind and body relax. Also, I would follow Hypnodoc's advice and read his suggested ideas. Good luck. |

Ok, so I can be hypnotized without being in a deep trance. Does that mean I could be hypnotized without trance/relaxation and absorbing suggestions fully just like that - without noticing any changes?
The main question is how do I know when I enter this hypnotic state. Obviously I have been focusing on the wrong thing, then. If I get the effects as per Matrixman's post, does that mean that it could have been only trance without hypnosis? Or am I getting cought up in linguistics and that is a clear indication of hypnosis?
So, if it's a question about being hypnotized or not, does that mean that there is no gruadility in my goal? As in - I'm in the hypnotic state or not? That would mean I have to work a bit on my beliefs.. And in turn, does it mean that somnambulistic, deep somnamublistic, elman's, etc states are an effect of suggestion of relaxation? |

Posted - 03/16/2006 : 5:16:30 PM Do a search on "Depth of Trance" in this forum (search link is at the top of every page) and I think you will find a lot of information about this.
Good luck with your progress. |

Seems like indeed I didn't give enough info. Well, as I understand self hypnosis is something that is learned through practice, so I need a way to measure my progress. Be it a CD or a technique, my main goal now is to achieve a state where I can start making changes. I know that the fastest way to do that would be to visit a hypnotherapist and anchor the state, but for now I'll try and do it myself. So, I want some test that could be measurable in terms of how deep I am and to be an indication of my progress. Or maybe just a yes-no test to see if the depth is relatively enough or not. |

Posted - 03/16/2006 : 3:13:31 PM I am going to assume certain conditions, since you don't give much information. I am assuming that you know nothing about hypnosis, but have bought a CD and are not sure it is working for you? Well the facts are, that they often don't work, but even when they might, the doubts that cause the owner to TEST themselves, interfers with the trance state, and negates it. The only sure way to be happy that you are not wasting your time, is to visit a practitioner, and find out what trance feels like, and have the practitioner test you. CDs work fine for relaxation, but for other uses, I am not enamoured with them. |

Posted - 03/16/2006 : 07:18:07 AM Hello
On the assumptions of generalized commonalties, time distortion, fast or slow, where you seem to have a sense of only being in trance for only a short time say 2-3 minutes, yet when you look are the time, 25-60 minutes plus have gone by, or the other way round, where, you feel that you have been in trace for a long time only to find is, only a few minutes have past.
Depending on weather you’re listing to a CD, etc, how much of the content do you remember, if very little, then that might be a sign of amnesia, of what has been listened too; this is also a good sign, that you have been in trance.
Watering eyes, it also a possibility and a sign that you have been in a trance. A general sense of wellbeing and feeling of deep relaxation, are also common possibilities.
