Posted - 04/03/2011 : 1:09:16 PM hi all, i'm very new to hypnosis but i have recently become very fascinated by the whole thing and i've been wanting to try it. I had been putting it off repeatedly partly because been busy and partly (possibly more importantly) as i felt slightly nervous about it. I know in theory there's no real "danger" as such, but still. The other night i had a fairly rough night (thinking about some work stuff) and i was turning and tossing in my bed and i decided to try self hypnosis. I kept my hands on my chest (i quite like the position although im not sure it helps as you become very self conscious of your heartbeat) and started visualising myself in a garden etc etc. I tried the technique of counting down from five imagining of being immersed in water. My body felt quite heavy and sort of numb, my hands in particular. As i counted 1, being usually skeptical, i was pretty sure nothing would "happen", however i was taken by surprise as i had the strangest feeling ever. I kinda felt i was really underwater, my eyes were really "awake", let me explain this, it was like i had two sets of eyelids as i didn't actually open my eyes but it felt like i did! My eyes were moving quickly and i felt very "aware". However i felt tense and uneasy and my breath became very fast and shallow, my heartbeat accelerating, and started feeling very nervous and my inner voice was saying "get out get out" as if i was in a dangerous place and didn't know what to do. Very oddly the moment i counted to one i suddenly and unexpectedly became aroused for no real reason (i apologise if somebody feels offended... Just describing what happened), not emotionally, just "physically". So as i was feeling this sense of slight panic i interrupted the whole thing. Quickly counted up to 5 and opened my eyes and the whole thing was over. I tried again last night but i couldnt really got to the same stage, not sure if its because i feel somewhat afraid now. Can somebody give me some advice? What do you think of what i felt? Was i really in a trance or was it just some sort of self induced placebo-like panic? I can say i'm mot an anxious person and it's not like i panic easily over things. Why would i feel afraid of trying it? Any comments will be very welcome, many thanks. |

Posted - 05/14/2012 : 11:52:14 AM I'd be really careful with the kind of programs and practices you come accross - do your research before getting into it. Hypnosis (whether self or through a specialist) can be very powerful. And if you don't know what you are doing you might achieve no results or worse yet you can really put yourself on the wrong path. Good luck! |

Posted - 08/24/2011 : 2:25:29 PM hi, i have tried another couple of times and one of the reasons I wanted to access my subconscious was to get back in shape. Whether it helped or not I'm not sure but my guess it has because I've been sticking to my dieting and training schedule like never before. I've lost 10kg/22lbs since my last post and I'm feeling very happy and much more comfortable with my body. The only thing is that I only seem to be able to get into a proper trance if I'm in the middle of the night when unable to sleep so I haven't really done it again recently as I've been sleeping pretty well. |
Self Hyp with Ease |
Posted - 08/24/2011 : 03:24:24 AM Anything like this experienced for the firsttime can feel strange, or even cause irregular things to happen while in it. The feeling of physical numbness is normal, yes, and actually one of my favourite things about any kind of meditation or in this case Self hypnosis.
I was hypnotized to stop smoking and carried on with self hypnosis...with great success. I experinced a lot of things you did, short of arousal. Although, if your body is adjusting and you are feeling physical effects why should this be any different.
You might find that the fear you felt was an unconscious protection in away, which can be eased up with time and practice. There are some spiritual people I have known who also say that it is your inner voice guiding you away from something that may be halmful for you.
Have you tried self hypnosis since?

Posted - 04/03/2011 : 2:17:20 PM And abreaction is an emotional... "release". On one's own, or with an in-experienced hypnotist, they can be uncomfortable... and unproductive. They can "feel" uncontrollable and scary. With an experienced hypnotist, they are leveraged and used to address behavioral responses. |

Posted - 04/03/2011 : 1:43:31 PM forgive my ignorance, what does abreaction exactly mean?
thanks for your response, i kinda thought the same perhaps trying it when i was worried about stuff was something for a pro rather than for a beginner... i'll give it another go when i'm already relaxed i guess. would you have any comments about my feeling of being aroused? is that normal?? |

Posted - 04/03/2011 : 1:33:03 PM The way you described this, I would wonder if you were approaching an abreaction of some sort.. possibly because you were emotionally stressed about work it was still on your mind...
The eyelid movement, hands feeling numb, body feeling heavy... that's all normal stuff. The mental/emotional discomfort is not.
You know you can "emerge" yourself from hypnosis easily enough... I would like to suggest practicing the hypnosis once more. If you do not have any problem then, all's well. If you encounter a similar issue, go see a reputable hypnotist to work through the issue so it no longer holds you back. |
