Posted - 06/01/2007 : 1:40:10 PM Hello,
My name is Brian and I am new to the forum.
Some background on me: I have worked with and been successfully hypnotized by a hypnotherapist and am trying to get better at self-hypnosis to reduce general stress and anxiety in my life.
Here is my problem: At times, I have feared that during self-hypnosis my mind will wander into a negative, counter-productive thought and that this thought will leave an impression in my subconscious mind that will do harm later. Of course, I understand that this fear is just another silly manifestation of my anxiety.
The problem is that the fear tends to generate the "pink elephant" syndrome. That is, if you tell someone not to think of a "pink elephant", the first thing that pops in their mind is exactly that. Well, I might be having a great self-hypnosis experience, and then I will remember the fear of a negative thought. Sometimes, this will be enough to generate a negative thought. In trying to deal with these thoughts, I often experience anxiety, frustration, and doubt and this ruins the experience.
Do any of you experienced practitioners know of any techniques or strategies to deal with negative thoughts or fears that randomly arise during self-hypnosis?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Best wishes, --Brian |

Posted - 09/28/2014 : 10:16:24 AM So many answerers. All work at some level. I am not a professional, by do enjoy the benefits of self-hypnosis. My approach is more common sense and less clinical. First, when I induce a relaxing state from my self-hypnosis, usually I will fall asleep for several hours. I like waking up and can think through some of the thoughts I had while asleep. Fresh ideas. If necessary, I will read a bit and quickly fall asleep again. I do not fight being awake. I have a book by my bed that is like a sleeping pill to me...not because it is boring, but because it has ideas that allows me to relax and develop those ideas. For me that is relaxing and beneficial. Click onto my url if you want additional info..not forcing it on you. Confidence generates good sleep. |

As you said, when you allow yourself not to think about a pink elephant, your brain actually appeared pink elephant picture. This is because the subconscious mind can not distinguish between "no" or "yes", that is, the subconscious can not distinguish Neg. The solution is not to use negative words, more use of affirmative and positive words, instead of negation and negative words.
For example, use "happy", instead of "not unhappy."

Posted - 11/11/2010 : 12:48:10 PM Ratobranco, are you still around? I've some ideas for you about how you can enjoy hypnosis without being influenced by the "negative" thoughts. I'd like to share it with you. |

Posted - 09/07/2010 : 09:09:30 AM Hypnosis in and of it's self is harmless, what creates potential issues with hypnosis are the motives and ethics of the person or people using it if you have someone out to do harm you get bad hypnosis, if you have someone out doing good you get good hypnosis, it's that's simple.

Posted - 08/24/2009 : 11:33:11 AM I use a different technique to shut off the chatter in my mind. I may be dating myself, but here goes. I imagine that the cone of silence (from the Get Smart TV show in the 60's) is coming down over my head and blocking all negative energy, including the chatter in my mind. If you are not familiar with this, it was a glass dome that would come down over 2 people so they could talk in private. I just imagine this, and all that chatter stops. I have also used this with clients, you can even call it a hat of silence. |

Posted - 06/06/2008 : 03:32:39 AM I have to agree with JonRhodes about the rest that your body gets while just lying in bed. Even if your mind is moving rapidly the body is getting much needed rest.
The next thing that I do in a sleepless situation is work to quiet my mind. I focus on a blank screen and think "Peace and Quiet". As the chaos dies down I then drop the command and just focus on the blank screen. A subtle form of self hypnosis is being used here.
It does not take very long to achieve sleep for me using this technique. Something else that I sometimes do is give hypnotic commands to sleep and use that sleep time for the subconscious to find the solution for whatever it is that is capturing my conscious attention.
What this is doing is distracting the conscious and giving the project to the subconscious allowing you to get to real peaceful sleep. Instead of carrying concern for the negative thoughts during self hypnosis, define all or many of the positive aspects of self hypnosis.
If you focus on negative things/events, then that is what you will manifest. Where attention goes, energy flows. Think negative and that is what you will get. Now turn that around, think positive and your results are positive.
It is your choice, stay in negativity or choose the positive and enjoy these results.
Self hypnosis for fun and health. |

Posted - 06/01/2007 : 3:12:20 PM MatrixMan,
Thank you for your reply.
My fear is not so much about things like bodily movements that I have direct control over, but more about things that I only have indirect control over.
An example of what I'm talking about would be something like sleep. Due to anxiety and stress, I have had problems sleeping in the past. At one point, I got into a routine where I was waking up everyday at 4:00 AM and not being able to go back to sleep. I became very concerned that this was going to continue happening--and it did...
I know that I can improve my sleep by relaxing and by undoing the negative programming that gives rise to self-fulfilling fears about sleep. But this of course is not as easy as just moving my arm.
Sleep is one of the specific areas I am trying to work on in self-hypnosis. There have been times during self-hypnosis when my mind unintentionally stumbles into a memory of a sleepless night, or of a fear of not being able to sleep, etc. What I am trying to figure out is what to do when such an event happens, or whether I even need to do anything other than relaxing, letting it go, and shifting my attention back to what I was mentally focusing on. Will that leave a harmful stain on my subconscious?
Thanks again for your help. It is greatly appreciated. --Brian |

Posted - 06/01/2007 : 1:58:18 PM Hi Brian- I will get back later with a fuller reply- yet will ask you to think about this- over the years that you have been watching TV. out of all the the saturation from the news dealing with war-crime-sex. hurt etc. have you ever committed a serious hurtful nasty act?
I am guess no. if you can function well after years and years of saturation from the negative aspects of the world. I am guessing that even if a fleeting negative thought popped in to your thought stream, you would have the filters to know what is good and not good behaviour. and deal with life in just the way that will work best for you.
