Posted - 12/11/2008 : 11:20:56 AM Remote hypnosis, using instant chat, 'Skype', or phone seems to becoming more popular. As a business, it makes sense to 'cast your net further', but I'm concerned about the quality and results of this practice.
Good points: convenient, less costly, seen as 'safer' by someone unwilling to go to an office visit....
Bad points: more room for errors, less thorough intake, more risk of an unseen (delayed) abreaction...
I know what I think and why, but am hoping to get other views, from practitioners as well as clients..

I wouldn't feel comfortable with it either way - as a hypnotist or as a consumer. I would want to meet the client and interview them in person. I really don't see how it could be as effective of a session done over the phone.

Posted - 12/11/2008 : 5:35:54 PM There are hypnotists that market their services specifically over internet voice chat and phone. There are some using instant message chat - eyes open hypnosis of course.
I'm working with someone that had a very severe delayed abreaction from instant message hypnosis work. Prior to this, I had not given the issue much thought. |

Posted - 12/11/2008 : 5:26:00 PM Hi Patrick,
I think part of the problem is that every method of persuasion today is considered hypnosis. I read a book by a fairly popular psychologist on hypnosis and according to him the 'Feel, Felt, Found' technique is using covert hypnosis. That technique has been used for decades in sales training - "I know how you feel, I used to feel the same way, but what I found . . ." Is it effective? Sure, but I don't think I'd call it hypnosis.
My point is you can do practically anything today and call it hypnosis. I'm not really sure what they're doing on a chat room that they're calling hypnosis.
If I was going to have a session done, I'd prefer to do it in person. If the person doesn't feel comfortable, have them bring a friend with them. Just my opinion.
On the other hand, some hypnotherapists make personalized CD's for people. I guess there wouldn't be that much difference between one of those and a phone session. I guess it depends on what's being done.
I hope this has been helpful. I always enjoy taking both sides of an issue.
