Posted - 10/19/2007 : 6:05:55 PM I have a new client who wants to call me 3 times a week....not for my services, but just to talk as friends. Sorta touchy huh! So I just said I'd be happy to provide "services" at these times. Needless to say I wasn't prepared for this. I'm not interested but don't know how to tell her. I wish I had some type of disclaimer on Doctor/Patient relations. I want to keep it "professional"...know what I mean. I could not find anything like this on the internet either. My school did not provide this. Any advice? |

Posted - 05/15/2014 : 5:06:29 PM I agree with Gil that it was neglectful of your trainer not to cover this topic. You simply say to the client "It is important that we keep our relationship professional. can you agree to do that?". If the client cannot agree, refer her elsewhere You could also suggest that she is welcome to call you for counseling r support and that the fee for that will be (whatever you will charge) and you will bill her for it.
It might also be useful to examine what you may have done to give her the impression that you are open to chatting outside of the session. She may be picking up some cue from you in which case yu may have the problem with other clients. Make sure to examine your own actions and professionalism. |

Posted - 10/19/2007 : 6:33:28 PM Wow! That was a quick response. Thanks Gil. You're right. One of my weaknesses I have to work on is trying not to hurt peoples feelings. I guess I'm looking for a diplomatic way to tell her. I certainly don't want lawsuits. |

Posted - 10/19/2007 : 6:19:07 PM Any social, sexual, romantic or interpersonal relations with a client is called "dual relationship" or "dual usage". It is grounds for a lawsuit and in many states it is a felony. The training school you attended is delinquent in not covering this issue. It does not matter who is the initiator, the therapist is always to blame! Your fault is in not telling the client that you are not available for these telephone calls. Stop fudging and protect yourself! |
