Posted - 03/12/2005 : 11:23:23 PM THE SEARCH FOR COMPREHENSIVE CAREER TRAINING IN HYPNOTHERAPY
In the past two decades, as hypnotherapy has achieved a much broader public awareness and acceptance, many seminars and brief trainings have been promoted as “Career Training”. However, most offer superficial training, or very academic training based on outmoded psychoanalytic theories. In the USA and the UK there are only a small number of schools that give several hundred hours' training in appropriate subject matter.
The search for comprehensive training should be an exhaustive one since inadequate and superficial training is the major cause of failure in hypnotherapy. Without proper professional training, the “Diploma” student will quickly discover not only a lack of adequate income but also the lack of spiritual nourishment due to feelings of incompetence and inadequacy in dealing with the problems and conflicts presented by clients. A reliance on simplistic methods such as discovering the "right script" for the particular problem or ailment will most often produce minimal or transient results.
Many Hypnotherapy training programs have brochures with a lengthy “laundry list” of topics to be covered in the program. Many of these programs are brief and superficial and have little time to cover the listed topics in depth. Naïve incoming students with no knowledge of “real world” training requirements are told they will be fully competent and capable of generating large incomes after training programs as brief as a two-day weekend. Inadequate training programs most often lead to failure in the marketplace and loss of capital investment for the beginning Hypnotherapist. Participants in these classes are often told that an additional training in “Marketing Your Practice” at exorbitant prices (up to $5000) for a few days of lectures and a handful of “handouts” will solve their inability to earn a living as a full time professional Hypnotherapist. There are a few schools that advertise programs that are entirely correspondence courses. Hypnotherapy training solely through correspondence courses is insufficient training to ready the student to begin a career in Hypnotherapy.
Many organizations with impressive-sounding names, including proprietary (in house) ones, offer “registration and certification”.They are eager to give their approval to virtually any and all “schools” so as to receive annual renewal fees from the “graduating” students who join their organizations.
The most necessary and effective form of successfully marketing your services is a background of meaningful live training with experienced teachers of reputation, development and utilization of high levels of skillful practice, and focus on continuing education.

I believe that in today's fast paced, highly technological society this gap in quality, affordable psychotherapy/hypnotherapy training can be filled by comprehensive online training supplemented by extensive supervised field training or clinical experience. I strongly believe that to be effective and responsible health care providers, professional therapists should receive full and comprehensive training in all aspects of psychotherapy, including psychological theory, in addition to their training in hypnotherapy. It is also about time that hypnotherapy as a science was upgraded to true university level studies and the training provided was firmly grounded on scientific principles. Today, with the notable exception of a few excellent schools, the majority of the schools offering hypnotherapy training out there are a joke. My position may sound extreme, but I believe that for hypnotherapy to be able to take the next critical step ahead and become a fully established and recognized discipline in its own right, related to but separate from psychology, it should be taught at universities by qualified, university trained instructors, and training should include the necessary components of psychological theory and psychotherapy practice.

Posted - 03/13/2005 : 04:43:09 AM Hi Gil
Your post is right, good training schools in the uk, are few and far between, and i do agree with you, that there is a host of poor to very poor trainers, "my re-wording" because its not the training thats Inadequate its the trainers. and i do feel that anyone who does a training, as to look at a mininum off 400/600 hours in class room training.
Hypnosis is an art, and it needs a number of very very good trainers, maybe like your self Gil. To Promote the best schools that you know, so the people that are looking for real life long learning skills have the best start.
Heres to better hypnosis training. |
