Posted - 01/13/2009 : 3:50:15 PM I've been interested in becoming a Hypnotherapist for quite some time now. My biggest roadblock right now is figuring out how to get certified and how to set up a clinic.
I live in Wisconsin and there are only two schools that offer certification in hypnotherapy, but both seem pretty sketchy. One of the schools is just a 16 day retreat and the other school takes less than six months. For the short duration of either of those it is still pretty expensive which makes me wonder if that's the only way to get certified or if I even need to spend that much money to do it, or if it's required at all... I'm also thinking about moving to New Hampshire and both offer the same schools, but I don't know what the Hypnosis certification laws are in either state.
Getting certified seems like the easier part when compared to starting your own clinic. How do you start your own practice? Do you just rent a building, set up shop, start advertising, and wait for clients to come? Would it be possible to make "house-calls" until you get enough people?
Also what is the average income of a hypnotherapist? |

Posted - 01/15/2009 : 6:13:50 PM thanks for the advice.
I've been reading/studying both NLP and Psychology for about a year now and have successfully hypnotized someone I know. I think with a bit more polishing of my skills, I would be comfortable with hypnotizing people.
The starting my own business part is what scares me, I'll have to look into some classes for that or start reading up on that.
As for the psychology protection act, I couldn't find any info on it. I'm guessing it restricts you in some way as a hypnotist or something that doesn't allow you to use hypnosis as psychiatrist? |

Wisconsin has a psychology protection act but does not have restriction on the use of the title 'hypnotherapist'. There is no state certification for hypnotherapy. But, you might be safer to use 'hypnotist'.
Didn't find info on New Hampshire.
Average income will vary widely as many hypnotist only do it part-time. Getting started is challenging, just like starting ANY business. You might be smart to take some small business/marketing classes.
Regarding education.. There are lots of sketchy schools. There are lots of crappy schools that look good. And, there are good schools that look crappy. Not a very easy thing to figure out :) I'd suggest finding a school that focuses on analytical hypnosis. You can ask them if they thoroughly (not briefly) teach advanced techniques from/like Dave Elman, Gerald Kien (www.omnihypnosis.com), Gil Boyne (www.gil-boyne.com, , and Roy Hunter (www.royhunter.com). The last three would be great to learn from, but they ain't in Wisconsin.
Get the hypnosis education and then get continued education, on your own or w/ seminars AS you begin practicing on friends and family. Some people will want to wait and learn more and more before practicing. This is a mistake. I'd suggest avoid spending much time/money learning NLP. Just get the basics as it will help your 'suggestion hypnosis' skills.
Just my 2 cents.
