Posted - 02/28/2005 : 5:20:11 PM After reading the ridiculous statement from Erickson, I have to laugh.I must reply, although i just came to Indiana from Ohio, I applied for this so-called hypnosis license and was turned down because I hadn't taken any hypnosis courses in Indiana. Well, let me tell you ladies and gentlemen, I received my doctorate in clinical hypnotherapy from an accredited university in New York. This university is nationally accredited and internationally accredited with a sister university in Italy. My professors, who were Ph.D's in clinical hypnosis, are world renown in their field. I am certifed by two organizations and belong to two hypnosis organizations, BUT, I was turned down for this certificate. Go figure! By the way, the only school that teaches hypnosis in Indiana was in Fort Wayne, and wouldn't you know it, they charged $15,000 for a hypnosis certification approved by the state. Oops! Did I mention that this school is owned by two committee people that are on the hypnosis board for Indiana? I rest my case about politics trying to run hypnotists. |

Posted - 05/07/2005 : 4:39:48 PM I am from Indiana -- in fact, still own a home there and am there about one-third to two-thirds (depending on the year) of my time. I, too, am (and have always been) concerned about Indiana's approach. I share many of the opinions about the problems with Indiana's certification program that I've read here and elsewhere.
My posting, now, however, is more about the use of "accreditation" in this thread; and assertions like:"I received my doctorate in clinical hypnotherapy from an accredited university in New York. This university is nationally accredited and internationally accredited with a sister university in Italy. My professors, who were Ph.D's in clinical hypnotherapy..." In fact, I'm concerned about the use of the word "accredited," and claims of degrees in hypnosis, hypnotherapy and/or NLP throughout these forums. I'm worried that the reader will be misled.
So I respectfully offer the following...

Posted - 03/01/2005 : 07:18:52 AM Thanks for the response Gil. It is very frustrating to me and perhaps many other very qualified hypnotherapists, that power-hungry politicians in Indiana have to make our lives miserable by passing such asinine qualifications to practice hypnotherapy. And I thought medical doctors had it rough getting their license to practice. There is, however, a light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. Our newly elected Governor, Mitch Daniels, is asking our General Assembly to sunset these boards, who have meaningless power over us. This Hypnotist Committee is the biggest joke in Indiana by July 2006. Don't get me wrong, I do believe in setting standards of qualifications for hypnotherpapists to "weed out" the less qualifed, who believe they can cure the world's problem with just a few hours instruction from these fly-by-night schools, but, there are many good qualified hypnotherapists who don't get the chance to practice their profession here in Indiana because of the ridiculous standards set by the state of Indiana. Our profession is a well-respected and effective means of treatment for people with mental disorders, which can be treated successfully with hypnosis. We have come a long and hard way to be accepted by the people and I hate to see it back-stepped by bureaucratic lunacy. I consider myself a professional in my field and I represent myself in that fashion, and I'll be damned if I will let any political airheads say otherwise. I have a fighting spirit to see this Board terminated and new standards initiated, which are acceptable by professional hypnotherapists, and not created by unqualified power-hungry politicians. |

Posted - 03/01/2005 : 12:50:20 AM Hello Bob, You are absolutely right! The Indiana law is a result of political manipulation. I was there! Jack Mason of Indiana received his hypnotherapy training from me at my school in Los Angeles. Jack asked me to help in writing a bill to certify hypnotists in Indiana. He explained that he had been active in Indiana politics for many years as his father had been before him. He further explained that it would be a bill to require a training of not less than one hundred classroom hours in a school approved by the Indiana Dept. of Private and Vocational Schools. The bill was written and introduced and began the legislative process. When the National Guild of Hypnotists learned of the bill, they protested to key legislators that the bill was ANTI-UNION!As a result the bill was defeated. The National Guild of Hypnotists had taught a 15 hr. weekend to many thousands and pronounced them Certified Hypnotherapists. The bill went through several sessions of the Legislature and several lawsuits filed by the National Guild of Hypnotists’. In one session, the Legislature actually passed the bill and the Governor failed to sign it. The Director of Information for the National Guild of Hypnotists (Rev. Giles) wrote a personal letter to an associate in which he called the Indiana Legislature “corrupt.”This letter was passed to a Legislator who had copies distributed to every member of the Legislature. The bill was then substantially changed and the training requirement was raised to 500 hrs and eventually the control was passed to the Medical Board. I bailed out early when the hours were raised beyond 200. The National Guild however, has continued to disseminate the lie than I was the architect and chief advocate of the bill. I returned to my original position of “free and open practice of hypnotherapy with Self-Regulation by responsible professional organizations.” Gil Boyne, Executive Director American Council of Hypnotist Examiners
