New Definition: Hypnosis
The Division 30 Definition and Description of Hypnosis
Hypnosis typically involves an introduction to the procedure during which the subject is told that suggestions for imaginative experiences will be presented. The hypnotic induction is an extended initial suggestion for using one's imagination, and may contain further elaborations of the introduction. A hypnotic procedure is used to encourage and evaluate responses to suggestions. When using hypnosis, one person (the subject) is guided by another (the hypnotist) to respond to suggestions for changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior. Persons can also learn self-hypnosis, which is the act of administering hypnotic procedures on one's own. If the subject responds to hypnotic suggestions, it is generally inferred that hypnosis has been induced. Many believe that hypnotic responses and experiences are characteristic of a hypnotic state. While some think that it is not necessary to use the word "hypnosis" as part of the hypnotic induction, others view it as essential.
Details of hypnotic procedures and suggestions will differ depending on the goals of the practitioner and the purposes of the clinical or research endeavor. Procedures traditionally involve suggestions to relax, though relaxation is not necessary for hypnosis and a wide variety of suggestions can be used including those to become more alert. Suggestions that permit the extent of hypnosis to be assessed by comparing responses to standardized scales can be used in both clinical and research settings. While the majority of individuals are responsive to at least some suggestions, scores on standardized scales range from high to negligible. Traditionally, scores are grouped into low, medium, and high categories. As is the case with other positively-scaled measures of psychological constructs such as attention and awareness, the salience of evidence for having achieved hypnosis increases with the individual's score.

This sounds like the typical impractical, muddled compromise that emerges from a committee. I can't see that it would be of any great use to students or anyone trying to discover what hypnosis is. It also shows the usual academic obsession with hypnotizability scales. I think they like this so much because what academic research is all about is measuring things, and the scales are an attempt to measure hypnosis.
I personally find most of these "scales" are irrelevant, certainly to clinical work, where you have to take your clients as they are and make the best of it. In clinical work, you take the time to allow a person to develop and practise their hypnotizability, whereas in research generally you are just measuring the initial, superficial response to a quick test.

This was the definition as he wanted it written. The class was taught by Ron Howard. Though I am not yet educated enough in the field of hypnosis, psychology or anything above behavioral sciences. I do agree it is vague.

There are many "definitions" of hypnosis, but there is no legal definition! In my classes, I used to distribute a paper quoting
35 famous "authories" and every definition was different. The interesting part is that no one has clearly defined what hypnosis IS!
Every wants to tell how to recognize that a person is in a hypnotic state and what can occur in the state. That is not a definition!
I knew John Kappas well for thirty years and if the definition you have posted comes from him, it is very strange. Your posted definition says nothing to define hypnosis and gives a series of speculative theories as to what occurs in the trance state.
It is an effort to-"dazzle them with footwork,and baffle them with terminology.. |

Hypnosis: Is an overload of messages, disorganizing our inhiitory processes. Triggering our flight or fight mechanizisms. Ultimately producing a hyper-suggestive state (hypnosis). -John Kappas.
This the defintion that was given to me when I took my most recent course. Is this a good working definition?

Let us all remember---it was the academics (psychiatrists, psychologists and professors) that suppressed the use of hypnosis in therapy for many years. Their rationale was that Sigmund Freud tried it and found it wanting and turned to free association. It was the good folk that they called "lay hypnotists" that revived hypnosis from the limbo where they had sent it. An eclectic patchwork of techniques and methodologies has emerged and been shaped by creative thought and experience into incredible new approaches to the renewal of body, mind and spirit. Starting in the 50's hypnotherapy training courses were developed and taught by "lay hypnotists".
A small band of mental health workers broke ranks and began the study of this ancient and mysterious phenomenon. Most of the academics today still follow the old path of labeling and classifying therapeutic response to treatment with the use of hypnosis. They persist in their meaningless efforts to create "double blind" studies based on single session efforts with college students. Meanwhile, the experienced and committed hypnotherapists continue to witness seeming miraculous transformations in their daily practice.
Hypnotherapy schools have opened throughout China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Numerous training facilities flourish throughout the U.K.and continental Europe. Mexico and Central and South America are joining in. Capetown, So. Africa is very active. Canada has had Hypnothefrapy schools for many years. In almost every case these traning facilities are operated by non-degreed practicioners. Hypnotherapy has truly become the "Therapy of the People"
As a result an ever-increasing number of licensed mental health workers are leaving the "old boy" network, finding practical and useful training and becoming active and successful practicioners on their own. Respect and plaudits to all the "old timers" who have been part of this great revolutionary change in helping mankind.

Never use a small word were a big one will do, and remember, having a degree does not guarantee the ability to understand those big words, but they make a sentence seem important regardless of content. |

I'm kind of wondering what use this information is to the majority of hypnotists who doesn't have the Ph.D to understand it. And I bet it took awhile for them to come up with all those big words too! |

Well Gil, like it or not, this is the basis for all training courses, hence the fixation by newcomers on the idea of measuring depth before feeling comfortable with offering suggestions. If it isn;t done by rote, there must be something missing. If deepening is not used, there must be a lack of trance, so use it every time. Oh well, they need to start somewere, just so long as they recognise that it is only a start, and that much will need to be lost as they progress towards true understanding of hypnosis in practise. I'm just glad my clients are in hypnosis before they even sit down in the chair, and that I need never use any formal induction if I choose not to do so. |

The new hypnosis paradigm is multidimensional. It subsumes the three major dimensions outlined above--the dimensions of fantasy-prone, amnesia-prone, and positively-set subjects--plus three additional dimensions: (a) The dimension of the social psychology of the psychological experiment (Orne, 1962) which includes implicit demand characteristics such as implicit social rules, obligations, and mutual roles and expectations that powerfully affect the behavior of virtually all subjects in all formal experimental situations. (b) The dimension of the hypnotist which includes such variables as the hypnotist's skill, charisma, wisdom and effectiveness in communicating with and profoundly influencing the subject. (c) The dimension of instructions and suggestions including suggestions that especially fit the fantasy-prone subject (suggestions for age-regression, age-progression, past-life regression and the suggestions included in the Creative Imagination Scale), suggestions that especially fit the amnesia-prone subject (suggestions for "blocking out" memories, pain, audition, vision, and other sensations), and suggestions that especially fit the positively-set subject (suggestions for heightened strength and endurance, enhanced learning abilities, and heightened awareness, proficiency, enjoyment, etc.) (Barber, 1985, 1990, 1993). |
