Posted - 12/12/2005 : 7:08:34 PM I recently learned about Milton Erickson's famous "handshake induction," whereby he could actually put people in a hypnotic state by shaking their hand in such a way that their critical thinking was interrupted.
Has anyone used this technique? Can people please share their thoughts about it?
Thanks. |

Posted - 12/31/2005 : 1:39:47 PM Gil is correct and this does not have to be a handshake to work.
Years ago, I was in a very crowded New York City tavern when I was introduced to a woman who worked there by a mutual friend. I had just finished classes in the city that afternoon for Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapy training. My friend mentioned that I was a Hypnotist to the woman and she said, "Oh, I love to be hypnotized." So I said, "In that case - sleep." I snapped my fingers just in front of her eyes as I said "sleep" for theatrical effect and she went right under. The place was loud, crowded and standing room only and she had no problem accepting the command.
This was a first time for me using an instant induction and I think I was as surprised as anyone else, but the ground work had been laid out and she was totally ready. I gave her some quick suggestions about feeling as though she just had a nice long nap, to awaken refreshed and feeling wonderful in every way and then brought her out. She was smiling every time I saw her the rest of the night.
I should mention here that we were not total strangers, as we had seen each other there before several times but this was the first time she knew me as "the Hypnotist."
A hint here for anyone who has success with this instant approach: Make sure you support the person - she was standing and her knees gave way as soon as I said "sleep," luckily it was a crowded place and she fell into me. I immediately told her that her legs were strong and that she could stand on her own - which she did.
Since I don't do Stage Hypnosis I have never needed to use an instant induction but given the right situation it works very well.
I call this the "Finger Snap Instant Induction" and you all can use it, but you must send me ten dollars every time you do. Happy New Year!

Posted - 12/31/2005 : 11:07:40 AM Hi Emit, Whether the handshake induction or any other form of induction, it is not possible (in my opinion) to induce the trance without having been known as a hypnotist. If someone introduces me as, Meet Gil Boyne, renowned hypnotist--he is famous for developing Instant Hypnosis--[/i, the stage is set and it becomes easy (for me)to rapidly induce the trance. This is the prestige factor which creates the mental expectancy. [i]"He is a hypnotist, I guess he can hypnotize me!" With Respect, Gil Boyne |

Posted - 12/26/2005 : 9:24:22 PM I am curious. Under what circumstances would you wish to use any instant induction on someone you had just met? I can think of no such circumstances, so I wonder if anyone can indeed answer your question from experience.... |

Posted - 12/26/2005 : 07:45:00 AM Are you guys talking about two different handshakes?
What I know as the Ericksonian handshake involves touching different parts of the person's hand using different fingers.
What I know as the Elman handshake is creating the expectancy that something will happen when you shake their hand, then shaking their hand.
Different mechanisms there |

Posted - 12/13/2005 : 3:32:13 PM It seems various people are cited as having originated or developed the handshake induction; but Gil, I will keep in mind that your company is the exclusive publisher of Dave Elman materials, thank you for this information.
Gil, do the prestige and expectancy factors have to be present in order for the handshake induction to work?
In other words, it wouldn't work on someone you've just met?

Posted - 12/12/2005 : 10:30:32 PM That's right Mike, The 40's is when Dave Elman was teaching. Of course, we understand that ANYTHING can be an induction when the prestige and expectancy factors are present. When I shake your right hand like this-----your eyelids close and you go deep asleep! Virtually any signal can be an induction-the subject expects some signal (the ritual) the hypnotist delivers! Gil Boyne |

Posted - 12/12/2005 : 10:00:41 PM Ah the handshake technique--Stage Hypnotist Peter Casson--his speciality used to good effect in the 1940s |

Posted - 12/12/2005 : 7:21:58 PM The handshake technique was orginated by Dave Elman who was teaching Medical Hypnosis at the same time that Erickson was teaching. The exclusive source of Elman book and recordings of his teaching is westwoodpublishingco.com With Respect, Gil Boyne |
