Posted - 09/11/2004 : 01:00:02 AM Hello to all, I was wondering if anyone has a book by John Hartland called Medical and Dental hypnosis? Is it worth having in your collection or is it a specialty book?
Thanks |

Posted - 04/14/2005 : 7:40:46 PM Peter, (a) at the time of publication, Hartland's books (1st edition 1966, 2nd edition 1971) were by far the best hypnosis/hypnotherapy text-books in the English-speaking world (there was also Ainslie Meare's 1960 text "A System of Medical Hypnosis", but Hartland's was much more widely used). (b) Get the second edition of Hartland; it contains many important changes and additions to the first edition (there are 3rd and 4th editions, but they were published after Hartland's death, and in some ways have drifted away from Hartland's main ideas). (c) Hartland was responsible for "positioning" the term "ego-strengthening". (d) The 1971 edition contains his famous "ego-strengthening routine" in its final form -- the script for this routine is very strongly based on Emile Coué's "Curative Suggestion Procedure" (in his Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion). (e) Hartland's 1966 text introduced the (now widespread) ". . ." convention to indicate pauses for breath etc. in a script. (f) His text-book contains a wide range of scripts, dealing with a wide range of clinical problems, and his discussions of the way he understood the problem from a hypnosis point of view is often extremely helpful (regardless of whether you finally choose to use his approach or not). (g) Even today, his book can teach you a lot, regardless of whether you are a medical hypnotist or a clinical hypnotherapist. (h) Hartland was unique in that he was a psychiatrist (as was Lewis Wolberg). He was also unique in that he strongly advocated the use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy (as did Lewis Wolberg) for a wide range of disorders. Hope the above helps |

I have no idea why there should be secrecy, and didn't realise there was.....I believe I have covered what you asked once I read your second post, which gave sufficient detail to allow me a sensible reply. If you have more questions, feel free. On the other hand, nobody can really give you much information at a distance. It required a face to face interview for that. I suppose, that fact that little if printed about this subject, is no different from other subjects were so many causes exist that it is not possible to print information that would assist. Anthony, I agree with what you say but my main question is Why is there so much secrecy in the topic of hypnosis? I want to investigate all avenues but keep getting "bogus answers" meaning nobody really wants to talk about certain subjects it is so hard to get real answers when learning resources can't be found. |

"The only stupid question, is the one that wasn't asked"..... I used to ascribe to that also, but found out later, that some questions are indeed stupid when asked....(G).......If you ask from a genuine desire to know, and if you have attempted to find the answer for yourself before asking, then indeed there IS no stupid question. If on the other hand, you ask just to hear your own voice, or see your question in print, or if you have made no attempt to find the answer for yourself first, then it is possible to ask a stupid question I'm afraid.....Anthony |

very valid point,I am new to this and really like the honest people that take the time to help educate the not so well informed persons.
my old employer says " The only stupid question is the one that wasn't asked" Thanks |

Posted - 09/11/2004 : 12:51:55 PM From the title, it is obvious that it is a specialty book, but as to whether you should buy it, it depends on your interests. Are you planning to study medicine, or dentistry, and get a degree in one of these specialties? If no, you are barred from using hypnosis for anything to do with medicine, and only able to remove fear or pain in the area of dentistry, something you don't need a book for....... For you, or for anyone asking for advice and assistance, please set your own goals, and then state them clearly in your post. That way, the replies you get will be aimed at what you want specifically. Anthony...... |
