Posted - 01/27/2019 : 10:54:50 AM I'm new to hypnosis. I've only read some books and watched some videos about hypnosis.
Those books emphasie that is important to explain what hypnosis is in attempt to remove fear etc.
Nowadays everybody in this field knows hypnosis is not sleep, and many an outsiders don't even know what hypnosis is exactly. So why do I have to use hypnosis to my future subjects if I want to apply this to them? The fear or misunderstanding on hypnosis I think is completely created by ourselves.
Why don' I adopt any name of it, or game, or psychotherapy and tell them what they will have during this game, or whatever.
The misnomer is conditioned with fear, worry. Why don't hypnotists or hypnotherapists just bypass the misnomer so the hurdle of fear, etc. virtually doesn't exist.
I feel this is like a demon which doesn't exist in my mind, but once people create a name for it, and it indeed exists. If we ignore the misnomer, everything is fine. If we replace hypnosis with another name , fear disappear
I don't think it is unethnical not telling them of hypnosis, but it is wrong. We should directly tell them the right thing and ignore the wrong one.
What do you think about this? Thanks!

Could you please answer these questions at your convenince if possible?
Thank you again for your response. :)
PS. Previously I just monologued to myself mostly. In this way, I remind myself of keeping learning and record my understanding on hypnosis.

Yes, I would like to have a professional LIVE training. It would be nice for me to experience the hypnosis by myself, rather than I try to imagine it in my own imagination.
That's why I am asking whether or not HMI is reliable a year ago. However it is too expensive for me togo to California for training for around one year, and I'm not sure if I can apply visa as US President Trump is tightening the visa policy, though I had a clean record to leave the USA in time before.
I will look for some opportunities if some big name hypnotists would come to China or neighouring countries or areas for any seminar camps in the future.
Theer are some trainings in China, but I'm not sure if I can really learn more during a couple days of crash course.
I don't understand what "certified Hypnotist" means. I've looked up the relevant laws and regulations online, and it is said everyone can practise hypnosis in Australia, the UK, etc. The sources I looked up do not give much credit about certifications which are issued by different training peoples or schools.
I only know HMI is authorised by the relevant government in the USA.
Could you please give me some info what is the most authoritive certificate in hypnosis in the USA or UK, or in the world?

Posted - 02/15/2019 : 02:59:14 AM Hello Mark,
Thank you for your responding. I had thought this was almost a dead forum, except for a few newcomers who just posted a reply and then drifted away without trace.
I'm happy to meet you, specially you're a professional insider.
However I am puzzled when you mentioned that your client didn't feel he had been hypnotised during the session. I am wondering why you didn't use convincers like arm lock, amnesia techniques, etc.
As I know, some hypnotists applied the convincers while asking their subjects to personally admit,"I'm convinced". This also reinforces the hypnotic effects as well as self-hypnotiing by the subject her/himself.

Posted - 02/15/2019 : 01:20:48 AM Some people talk about a more positive approach to the pretalk. The fact is, if you want people to come to you to help them with hypnosis, then you probably need to use the term hypnosis. The word itself has an energy to it that can create interest among people.
If you are just going to be doing entertainment, then you might have a different way of talking about hypnosis. When presented in the right way the pretalk is important to your success. There are many misconceptions about hypnosis and if you ignore them, then you can run into problems.
I was working with someone last weekend who drove 3 hours for a session. He called me asking specifically about hypnosis. I told him, like I do everyone, you will hear my voice. You will be aware while you are hypnotized. If someone expects to be asleep or unconscious, then they are aware once they are hypnotized, they will start saying, I am not hypnotized, I am not hypnotized. Then even if they were, they may bring themselves out of the state.
This is just one of the important things to explain to people. Some people have fears, like what if I get stuck and can't come back. When you explain that properly, they understand that's just something from the movies.
My client last weekend had to take a break and go to the restroom during his session. I told him about this before we started, and he did go to the restroom before we started, but he had to go abotu 1 hour into the session.
No problem, I gave him suggestions. Come up just enough to be able to take care of business, as soon as you sit back in this chair you go back as deep as you are now, or even deeper.
He actually had a better experience AFTER the restroom break. Why? He told me after the end of the session that he was thinking he was not hypnotized. But when he got up to go to the restroom, he felt like his body was heavy and he said it felt like he was walking in his sleep. This actually helped him to know he was hypnotized. He was thinking he was not because he was aware of my voice. So even when you tell someone this, the conscious mind often continues to work and attempt to convince the person they are not hypnotized.
After that restroom break, he had no doubt about it and the rest of the session went much better.
Some people have expectations, so it is important to explain what they need to know to have the best experience possible. Just like a client will begin to wonder and do their own thing, people who learn online, even by taking online training, miss out on the interaction with the other students and the instructors.
The best way to learn hypnosis is by finding the right live Hypnotherapy Training that works for you. A live Hypnotherapy Training course provides the opportunity to learn by example, experience hypnosis as the client and the therapist and also to learn during supervised practice sessions.
There is nothing wrong with learning on your own. That's what I did when I started learning hypnosis. Eventually I took a 500 hour Hypnotherapy Training course and became a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. When you learn on your own, there is always the possibility that you do not get a complete understanding or develop bad habits.
I learned a lot on my own. When speaking to my Dad about hypnosis (he started learning hypnosis before I was born) I had learned so much on my own that he asked me if I had taken a class, I had not. When I did attend a live training, I learned so much more. If you are serious about learning hypnosis, do yourself a favor, find an instructor and take a live training. Do your homework, learn what you can online, that's how I started, then use what you learn to help you select the best instructor for you.

Posted - 02/14/2019 : 07:55:31 AM I suddenly have a better understanding about pretalk.
Whatever overt and covert hypnosis does, the priority is to increase suggestability by all means, from rapport building, mirroring, pacing, metaphor, to story telling, etc.
If the subject doesn't worry about hypnosis, it is very stupid to build potential resistance via telling what it is to them. |

Posted - 02/12/2019 : 6:52:16 PM After a few days, I review this question of mine and think it is not necessary to tell the subjects.
For hypnotherapists, it is probably nearly a must to do the pre-talk in order to remove the fear, resistance as the client steps into the office of the therapist. They might be wondering or worrying about what hypnosis is, i.e. Does hypnosis really work for me? etc. Would I tell my secrets during hypnosis, etc And the concern of cultural background. Hypnosis does NOT bear very positive name in the Western world, for example, the movie named Svengali which is an evil figure.
But in China, we do have virtual hypnotists but they don't perform under the name of hypnosis but as witches both in superstition as well as traditional Chinese medical treatments.
The equivalence of hypnosis in Chinese is a loan word from Japanese word as they use some Kanji which originates from Hanzi that literally means Han Chinese characters. And the Japanese coined the word from Western hypnoiss.
Many Chinese people don't have an inkling what hypnosis is. And hypnosis doesn't not bear a bad name in China, where we don't have evil practicers under the modern name of hypnotists, yet there were a couple media reports that some people hypnotise their subjects and raped them.
In practice, people are hypnotised by TV programmes, other people, even by themselves all the time. These are covert hypnosis. They are not really awared of what are happening to them, so there are no fear, no resistence to accept suggestions. |
