Is it possible for a subject to have no 'concious' memory of being hypnotised, when they have been, for several years? |

First I'd like to mention that when can do "waking" hypnosis on a person in which case the person doesn't even know that he or she is hypnotised, as it doesn't involve any formal induction and it can be verbal or non-verbal.
However, here is a lovely story excerpted from the book "Monsters and Magical Sticks" (a truly delightful book) that may be more closely related to your question:
"Several years ago while doing research on hypnosis, a professor of psychology induced a somnambulistic trance in a subject. The subject was capable of the most profound hypnotic phenomenon, including post-hypnotic amnesia. The thrust of this research was to test the theory that upon carrying out post hypnotic suggestion, the subject would re-enter the hypnotic state.
While in this somnambulistic state, the subject was told that when a clock chimed 10:00 p.m. at that evening's faculty party, she would remove one of her shoes; place it on the dining room table and put roses into the shoe. Further, it was suggested that she would have no memory of the suggestion; it would appear to be her own idea, and she would fee compelled to finish her task.
A very interesting thing happened on the way to the forum. While she was carrying out the hypnotic suggestion, the professor asked her what she was doing. She replied that her husband had given her a beautiful crystal vase that looked just like her shoe and she had never known what to do with it. She went on to state that it had suddenly dawned on her how to arrange flowers in the vase and she had to try it in her shoe before she forgot.
While her explanation appears absurd, she acted as if she believed she was telling the truth. As the professor tried to explain to her how ridiculous her story was, she became anxious, agitated and very defensive. The experiment was terminated due to her extreme discomfort."

The subject recalls all that happens while in trance but nothing about the trance afterwards.In fact when asked believes that she has never been hypnotised. |

Hi Fox
First of all, what is memory? And how does it work? What is hypnosis and how does that work? In relation to your question on memory/forgetfulness.
Lets just for a little while just believe that hypnosis doesn’t exist.
Have you ever misplayed your keys at home, and looked and looked, only to find them after a period of time, there in a place you have already looked? Were you in a trance? Did your remember to forget or forget to remember?
Do you remember being a kid and reading a favourite book? How did you remember that? Did you have to go inside “trance” and think about a book that you liked, the thing with memory is it state dependent, if you have ever gotten drunk you might well have forgotten the night before, then when you get drunk again, your more lightly have better recollection than in a sober state.
The thing with trance/hypnosis is its state dependent, so what I am going to say is, could people have complete memory loss after trance, it depends on whether your asking the questions outside of trance or while your subject is in trance. Matrixman

I belive the answer to be 'yes' based on my experince of hypnosis, but when I have asked the question on hypnosis forums the answer is usually 'no'.So I am trying to understand if the people answering the question are accurate or less knowledgable than they claim or if the fault lies with myself and my own understanding of hypnosis. |

Apologies if question is not understood, I am trying to find out if its possible for a subject to be hypnotised on a regular basis but to have no recollection afterwards of the session or content. |

Hi Fox could you been little more specific, I'ts just that hypnosis doesn't work like that, we are capable of going into dissociated states of consciousness, yet we have too, from time to time, pop back into the real world, to get feedback, and yes there is a number of cases where partial amnesia/forgetfulness occurs yet not for any lenth of time a few hours at most.
After a session, but being in hypnosis for several years, is just not plausible, from the way you have writen your statment, and the way the neural codes work, in our barin is by association, meaning that by running through what one can remember, you would be able to reconnect the "so-called lost history". If we have a storage of information, in our mind-body system, then we can/could access it.
There for we can remember to remember what we need to, if it's useful, otherwise it best left where it is. Matrixman |
