Just read a BBC article about confidence and self esteem http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20756247
It's suggesting that confident people are seen as braggers and people with self-esteem as perceived as pushy.
You might be thinking that the UK is a little more reserved than the US and so typically would hold these views. However most of the research was done in American universities!
I think for sure that some of this is down to people over compensating for their lack of confidence/self-esteem and coming across too strong - so therefore acting confident but not feeling it (and we all know that feeling it is the most important) and those people can, through fear of exposure, sometimes seem to be dominant.
Think about it, if you went to see a stage performance and the acting was done in a way that everyday life is played out, then the play would be a little disappointing - no the actors have to exaggerate to grab your attention. So it someone doesn't really feel that important or confident and has to act, then naturally they will feel that they need to grab your attention as the stage performer does.
There is also the other matter where if someone is very shy they would consider a averagely confident person to be OTT whereas an overly confident person would see the same as soft or lacking in guts.
Maybe it will help to think about this next time someone pushes your buttons. |
