Hello all
This is my first post,
I'm a qualified hypnotherapist in the U.K, and I'm glad to have found a hypnosis discussion forum.
I just wondered if anyone else had thought this? Throughout my reading through my qualification I kept thinking how organised religion was so close to hypnosis
:- The bypassing conscious critical faculty- demanding blind faith in the unbelievable
:- Repetition and chanting-Praying
:- Health/healing- American preacher faith healing sessions
:- group pressure(stage hypnotism)- congregation.
As you can probably tell i'm an atheist, however this has helped me to understand the popularity of religion much better.
Just thought it may be an interesting topic to discuss

You are so right! It's not just religion. Walking on fire. Sweat lodges. Motivational speakers. Even the Law of Attraction techniques. In fact, if you make a list of all practices which have ANY track record at helping people, changing people, or influencing people, then study the techniques that they use, you will quickly see that their effectiveness directly relates to their ability to induce the hypnotic state. Sometimes it's a confusional induction, sometimes it's a boredom induction, sometimes it's a physical induction. Sometimes it's just visualization. But it is ALWAYS an induction.
Do they know they are doing this? Some do, most would not label it as hypnosis, however. In their mind, they are just being "effective."
However, realizing this does not necessarily invalidate the experience. Yes, in some cases, the experience is completely invalid. A sham. A fake. But not in all cases. When in a hypnotic state, a subtle experience is able to be more readily translated into something readily processed by the conscious mind. It's pretty much always in the form of a symbol, very rarely is it something that can be taken literally.
Understanding that the actual experience is not literal, it is symbolic, helps one to better understand the reality that is leading to the myriad of experiences that people have.

Yep, I think most of us come to this realization when we learn enough about the strategies of hypnosis. I was a practicing pagan when I started studying hypnosis. Not only did I learn that everything I thought of as real was purely suggestion, I learned that I'm pretty damn good at convincing other people, too. :)
What I am curious about is how many of the religious leaders realize that they are performing hypnosis? |

The American preacher is not the only one practicing faith healing - the Pope has a "healing" seating section next to him at every Wednesday audience at the Vatican. He doesn't slap people on the head and yell - he uses a more subtle approach. |

2. Strong emotions
