I was hoping I could get some help on here with setting up a hypnosis session for myself. Basically, my whole goal of the session is to use direct suggestion to implant new affirmations into my subconscious and then I want to connect the new affirmations to being able to make changes in my life (using ericksonian language patterns).

I was thinking I would first have the induction obviously, then a deepener or two, followed by a clearing section. In the clearing section I would use some guided imagery to imagine pulling out all/any negative suggestions that I've accepted in the past and I would incinerate them so they are gone. Then I would use direct suggestion to plant new affirmations in my subconscious and I would follow that up with guided imagery about planting new seeds for my life to run off of.

After that, I would use ericksonian patterns to seal the suggestions and to make the connection between accepting these suggestions and the new behaviors that I want. Finally I would emerge myself.

Does this sound good and/or can anyone give me tips?

People can fall asleep just fine when in trance.

I tell clients to listen to the audios during the day, when they're awake. This gives them more waking hours to act out/practice the audio's suggestions while the are fresh.

If you need to make an audio shorter in order to avoid getting distracted/drifting off, make multiple audios?

Hmmm. Well I guess my only problem would be that I can't fit everything I want into less than 10 minutes. I feel if I engage myself more during the audio, I'll be more successful. I have seen success from the audio's I've made already and my knowledge about how to be successful is skyrocketing with each attempt.

I thought if you get someone into a trance, they can't sleep until they are pulled out of a trance. So my focus has been making sure I'm in trance that way my longer sessions will be effective.

I used to listen to the sessions before bed but I think I was falling asleep during them. Now I do not do that.

"zoning out" is what I tell clients we're looking to achieve. : ) Some zoning out won't hurt anything, but too much will....

WHat you're describing is one of the reasons suggestion/NLP is less reliable. With less interaction, in the session, the mind will begin to wander.

I keep all of my client audios near 10 minutes or less (except for the single audio for sleep assistance). A short audio decreases the chance of distraction, increases the usefulness, and increases compliance to the recommended listening schedule.

Yes they are. I've had some trouble with previous beliefs about the therapist doing all the work in hypnosis.

One training course I took put all the responsibility on the therapist and it's something I've been trying to shake since. When I listen to my own audios, I often have to remind myself to participate because this is not magic.

I now know that the responsibility for change lies within me and that it's my responsibility to do what it takes but I find myself still zoning out at times on audios.

That is testing for depth, and yes, you can do a muscle catalepsy test with an audio. That is generally accepted for medium depth.

You can also test for somnambulism in an audio but would be pretty unreliable.

Commands can work on that process, but... it's not always necessary. If you're building the suggestions, it's quite likely the suggestions are already acceptable to you?

Ok, I can do that. I thought testing was a way to build compliance. Like in the elman induction when you have the person test thier eyelids being closed shut, it's really just to get them use to your commands, isn't it?

I thought commands worked on the process of momentum. You have to start with basic commands and commands the person has no objection to. Then you can give more powerful commands later on in the session.

Great idea!!! I completely forgot about future pacing and allowing for errors is also a great idea. I usually beat myself up when I make an error. Allowing myself to be ok with errors as long as I learn from them seems like it could do me a lot of good.


Is there anyway to build compliance through a recording to increase the effectiveness of the recording? Are there any ways to test through the use of a recording?

I'd add some visualization of yourself acting out the new suggestions in a variety of situations in your life. Repeat it a couple times - until the visualization feels natural to act out.

Also leave room for errors so any errors that may/will occur don't knock you off track.
something like -

"What you see in the imagery/visualization is your goal. Having a goal is important, it gives you the direction to work towards. Getting to the goal can be a process. Lots of little steps of progress. Every step of progress is just as important as the goal itself. Every step of progress is something you can be satisfied and happy with, and proud of. Progress is not always forward. Sometimes it can be a little sideways or even a little backward. As long as you learn from it, pick yourself up and move forward again, it IS still progress and something you can be content with. It too helps you achieve your goal."

Do not visualize mistakes, only visualize the goal. The concept of allowing for/accomodating error is what is important here.

If appropriate for your situation, along with, or after the clearing section, you might insert a forgiveness section. Forgiving yourself for past mistakes and forgiving others that may have affected you. Be sure you're clear on the definition of forgiveness you will use.
