Posted - 06/24/2007 : 5:53:37 PM I received this from a Medical Doctor in the UK who teaches at two major hospitals. He asked not to use his name as he fears reprisals.
Much of allopathic medical treatment is a limited and ultimately inadequate system. The main thrust is the attempt to counteract symptoms with medications. The attempt to find causes of illness by materialistic scientific analysis ignores many levels of human nature and cannot lead to a deep enough understanding of human problems and human potentials. It is small wonder that so many people seek a more meaningful and holistic approach to understanding and alleviating mental and physical problems. While allopathic medicine has achieved insights into the amazing complexity of mechanisms of the human body and acquired some technologies that can have beneficial and often life-saving effects, there are also a great number of problems arising from the suppression of symptoms and the major iatrogenic effects of very aggressive treatments. Medicine in the West has become such a commercial business that the economic and political forces operating do not always even make it work in the best interests of the consumers who pay huge sums of money to finance it. The incredible growth of complementary/ alternative/natural methods of healing is the strongest evidence of the above problems and with the increasing interest in improving health and prevention of illness these methods can only continue to grow in popularity . The long struggle between a reductionist materialistic philosophy of life and a spiritual approach to human existence is also reflected in a conflict between views as to the true nature of mental and physical illnesses and how they can best be genuinely healed. We can see that with the shift in consciousness of the public, there is a growing demand for a more humane and holistic system of treatment and healing. The encouraging news is that there is a growing number of practitioners in the medical profession that are attempting to integrate complementary methods into western medicine. This bodes well for the hypnotherapy profession provided it can rise to the challenge to establish higher standards and present itself as ethical and competent.
