Posted - 04/29/2009 : 12:56:52 AM I am a smoker, but not what i would call a heavy smoker, probably only 10 - 12 ciggies a day, but i really want to give them up because my health is getting worse and i want to spend more time doing other things and having more energy.
Yesterday i had a session with a hypnosis who claims he could make me stop smoking in 60minutes, lifetime guarantee! After my session i was driving home and all i wanted desperately was a cigarette! I got home and cigarettes was all i could think about. I tried to stay busy and stayed away from the cues that normally make me light up but it was so stressfull that i got angry, then upset. I had a smoke just to see if that would turn me off them once and for all but it didn't bother me to have that cigarette at all.
I called the hypnotist up and have a follow up session in a week's time. I feel the problem may have been that i sub-conciously wouldn't allow myself to go fully under. While he was talking to me i wanted to 'zone' right out and when i did that i could here him talking but i wasn't really listening to what he was saying, and because he was asking me to respond to questions i didn't want to miss what he was saying, so i kept bringing myself back to reality (so to speak). I wanted to go deep into relaxation but thought maybe i wouldn't be able to respond to him that way.
Do you think this is the problem why it hasn't worked?
Thanks Scarlette |

Posted - 01/13/2019 : 5:44:21 PM I agree with HypnoDoc. If someone else wants a person to stop and they do not really want to stop for themselves, it's an uphill battle that is likely to end in failure.
The same goes for someone who has another person paying for the session, they have no skin in the game. it does not matter if it is family or a friend, it's not different.
The first thing I ask someone on the phone when they call about smoking is, why do you want to stop. if they do not want to stop for themselves I do not even book an appointment. |

The best example that springs to mind is the person who attends the sessions because a loved one paid for the Hypnosis for them. These people are not there to quit but to show the loved one that they are willing to try. Most often the results are as you would expect and they announce to the world that Hypnosis does not work. Best bet is if the person quitting pays for their own sessions. |

Posted - 09/27/2012 : 3:48:10 PM I use one extended session of hypnotherapy for quitting smoking but that follows a very detailed session of analysis of the clients smoking profile so that the session is tailored to their needs. That could include stress management or self esteem or confidence work etc. depending on what I gleaned from the initial profiling session. I also get them to look at their lifestyle and prepare to make changes. It is rare now that therapists make claims about success rates because the advertising standards are getting itchy. unless a therapist has clients back into the consulting room or visit 100% of them and tests them then no one can talk about success rates and in doing so are leaving themselves open to ridicule. Unless of course it is 100% success that no-one walks away smoking.
I would definitely have a discussion with the therapist and if neccessary demand more sessions you never know it might work simply because you don't want to keep going back there. |

Posted - 05/14/2012 : 11:49:51 AM A similar situation happened to me. I think it really all depends on which type of therapy you use and feel comfortable with - I tried exploring different therapist, self-healing and other online programs. I think when it comes down to it - the decision is in your hands as well.
I practiced what I came across and eventually it worked. TIP: every time you want a ciggerette drink a glass of water! so simple - but so effective as a complimentary aspect to your thereapy. :-) |

Posted - 01/20/2012 : 04:44:17 AM I have a colleague who offers single session smoking cessation but he ensures client motivation by charging a fortune. I prefer the multi session approach and typically have good success with three to four sessions. It sounds to me like the hypnotist in question firstly failed to set up the verbal response prior to trance and secondly if the verbal responses were complex speech failed to pick up on the cues that the trance wasn't deep enough for them to happen subconciously. |

Posted - 08/25/2009 : 12:57:48 PM I agree that 1 hour is not enough time to deal with this issue. I spend 30-45 minutes talking then use a rapid induction so we still have plenty of time for the hypnosis portion of the session. The pretalk is very important in any type of session, and I make sure the client really wants to stop for the right reasons.
Hopefully you have been successful, though others may find this thread useful! |

Email me through my profile and I will send you a link to download my audio program. It is always best to have multi-sessions for smoking and weight loss as these require quite a bit of behavioral change at your life's center.
Listen to the program on any MP3 device or even from your computer speakers (headset is best if you are not alone) everyday for 20 days. This will really help solidify your session results. Many people have quit just using the audio program alone, but as a support for your live session it should really help.
Hope this helps...

Posted - 04/29/2009 : 09:24:28 AM Scarlette,
It's the hypnotist's job to manage your hypnotic 'depth' - to make sure it's correct for you. If you had any trouble with 'conscious interference', it is the hypnotists job to deal with it and help you through it. This is just one of the reasons 60 minute/one session quit smoking programs are silly. The success rate is lower relative to multi-session.
Let your hypnotist know of your thoughts/concerns and see if he can help you through it. If not, make use of the guarantee... (hopefully it is for money back rather than just additional sessions) and seek a different hypnotist.
10-12/day is not a lot in the scheme of things. But, the number of cigarettes does not necessarily speak for the strength/complexity of the behavior(s) involved.
One session is rarely enough time to thoroughly address the variety of behavioral motivating factors involved with an established smoking habit. If you have a weak/easy/simple smoking behavior, you would have been able to quit before 'resorting' to hypnosis, yeah?
'One session wonder' and 'lifetime guarantee' marketing are all about bringing in business/money to the hypnotist. These are NOT in the client's best interest. Hopefully this hypnotist will get you taken care of. |
