Posted - 08/17/2008 : 02:43:44 AM I agree, for controversial topics like hypnosis there is always criticism above and beyond research methods that would be acceptable or even exemplary in any other area of research. My understanding based on the study and some replies (and my own limited knowledge of methods etc.) is that Flammer and co. went out of their way to provide a CONSERVATIVE estimate of the efficacy of hypnosis. But its always best to be open to the viewpoints of other researchers I suppose. |

Posted - 08/16/2008 : 10:17:15 PM Hello lord312, I'm not able to keep up with everything, but I do try to stay informed. It helps me in my education as well as give me infor for my presentations. I like the Flammer and Bongartz study info. Some articles say they were a little biased in their selection of articles to review but is still seen as fairly accurate. At the same time, I see a fair number of reviews showing hypnosis is NOT effective. Those studies do not seem to have their bias questioned. Pretty frustrating from my point of view.

This looks like a really interesting study. It's great that you keep up with all of the research in the field. Have you read the Flammer and Bongartz metaanalysis in Contemporary Hypnosis? It's one of the best pieces of evidence for the efficacy of hypnosis in general that has come out in recent years. Thanks for the link! |

Posted - 08/16/2008 : 1:32:38 PM Pain is a pretty interesting topic in regards to hypnosis. There is a lot of university/clinical study information available. Below is a link to a study on how different people perceive pain. It has MRI pics that show the increased cortex and prefrontal cortex activity in those experiencing more discomfort than others while being exposed to an equal stimulus. I do not have a link handy at the moment, but MRI pics of people under hypnosis compared to 'conscious' shows a vast reduction in cortex and PFC activity.
Pain is mainly based on expectations and history, so hypnosis can have a strong affect on how a person experiences 'discomfort'. In a pain management session, we can increase as well as decrease the sensation. http://www.pnas.org/content/100/14/8538.full.pdf
I have more pain study abstracts on my site..

Posted - 08/16/2008 : 11:25:22 AM I understand completely. I was not planning on actually treating anyone without the supervision of a professional, I was just interested in seeing what the treatment of headaches with hypnosis would look like. There is a professor here at school who is a researcher in the field of chronic pain, specializing in face pain and headaches and I was hoping to learn more about how the problem is approached from a hypnotists perspective (the psychological treatments of such problems are actually pretty straightforward, but effective nonetheless).
Thank you for advice! |

Posted - 08/11/2008 : 4:51:26 PM I urge you not to treat anyone with"chronic headache pain", with or without a "script", unless you have a referral from a licensed physician. The client could be suffering from migraine headaches or even a brain tumor or avoiding confronting a repressed emotional conflict. In the USA, if a complaint is made, you can be arrested and charged with "practicing medicine without a licence", convicted and serve a term in the penitentiary. Go to the search bar for this forum and type in scripts for pro and con on using them. With Respect, Gil Boyne |
