We are all familiar with the Ericksonian type of inductions which include progressive relaxation and the use of scripts. Some of the other leaders in this field believe in quick, fast, overload and an almost instant conversion into the hypnotic state. I have used both and had some success with both. I would be interested in others experiences or comments on their successes or failures and perhaps what the pros and cons are to each. thanks in advance

Posted - 04/15/2004 : 6:02:28 PM i use Ericksonian type of inductions and alwaus success but Permissive techniques are good too in this techniques:are much less commanding. The idea with a permissive approach is to let the subject make the decisions about what he/she wants to do. There is virtually no emphasis on the "power" that the hypnotist has over the subject (because, if you remember, the hypnotist has no power over the subject!). Use of embedded commands is usually used fairly often to clue the subconscious mind into what it is you want them to do. Embedded commands will be discussed later in Chapter 1, but for now, just realize that embedded commands are commands that are "hidden" within normal conversion. The command words themselves are said with a slightly different tonality or tempo to mark them out to the subconscious mind. |

Posted - 01/28/2004 : 5:26:11 PM OH! OH! OH! Rapid inductions are usually more effective once a person has already been hypnotised. I don't know why exactly, except that every time a person enters a (deep) trance, they are able to enter it more easily and quickly. Its like visiting a friends house in another city. The first time may take awhile to get there, but after a couple trips it gets easier. After awhile you start learning neat little shortcuts to make the trip faster and easier. Trance is like that. The first time a client is hypnotised a rapid induction may not be enough to put them into trance because they don't really know how to get there yet. After the first session (especially if you fractionate - correct me if that term is incorrect - take them out of trance and back in several times) rapid inductions will have a much better chance of working. They have already been taught the process of going into trance, so you can just tell them thats what they're supposed to do (go into trance) and they'll do it on your cue. Is that right? |

Posted - 07/28/2003 : 10:05:49 AM Erickson using scripts? Were did you get that one from? He was a master of suggestion, and never had need for a script, the only value of which, is to read, digest, and understand, so that you will learn how to formulate suggestions based on what the client tells you, and what they don't, which means you read between the lines as you question them. I am beginning to wonder about who is practising these days, and how competent they are....Perhaps I had better come out of retirement, and show how it should be done (G) Oh yes, method, this should be based also on the client and how you read them, but usually the slow method is prefferable for a first induction, and the reason for is should be explained to the client in advance. Now, no prize for this one, but anyone know WHY I suggest this? Terry |

Elman's 'Hypnotherapy' is a gold mine. So are Ormond McGill's books.
My usual routine is -
1. Do the Luscher Color Test & read out the results. /
2.Ask, "what are we going to deal with here today? " /
3.[Sometimes ask a question or two if I feel the need to clarify something.] /
4. Say, "Are there any questions you want to ask me about hypnosis?".. /
5. "Please find a spot on the ceiling & keep your eyes still & fixed there. /
6."What are you looking at? [ wait for a response ] /
7. "What are you thinking while you are looking there?" [wait for a few seconds for a response] /
8. "What are you feeling while you are gazing there?" [wait a few second for a response] /
9. "Take a big breath & as you close your eyes allow your whole body to sink into the chair. Let the chair completely support your weight. /
10. "Relax the muscles in your jaw, imagine your jaw is melting like butter on a hot day. Relax your forehead & eyes. If you wish to adjust your posture in any way you can do so. When your eyes are very relaxed & want you to test them... & etc.

I usually use the Elman induction. I perfer rapid inductions. They save time, minimize the interference of analytical mind. There are times I will use a progressive relaxation induction to add variety with an exsisting client.....for a really stressed client.....as an indirect with some groups or a defensive/resisting client. We use progressive as the primary induction technique for our HypnoBirthing clients.

Rapid Inductions are best as they do not leave any time for the client to analyze what is happening. Before they realize it, they are intranced.
