Posted - 06/19/2016 : 04:49:46 AM Hi. I have a unique problem. due to my anxiety, my brain thinks my going to sleep process, and my dreams, are the cue to forcefully awaken me. It does so by giving me these flutters in my chest. Sometimes they are in my stomach and head and spine. They feel like falling or stage fright. They happen every time I nod off and wake me back up. If I manage to sleep, with drugs, sometimes my dreams set them off.
I need help convincing my brain that I should not be startled awake by going to sleep or by dreams. Is there a way to do this? |

Posted - 06/20/2016 : 05:22:17 AM Anxiety, stress and depression are common causes of nocturnal waking. Your symptoms are typical anxiety-related symptoms.
Anxiety issues that are left open-ended and have not been dealt with in the day can leak into your dreams. Your brain uses sleep to resolve these issues, but the nature of them can also trigger the release of stress hormones and cause you to wake you up.
Are these drugs prescribed or recreational?
Aim to stabilise your anxiety first with medication from your GP and/or therapy. Hypnosis can also help you to desensitise your startle response.
Anxiety is at the heart of the problem. Sleep and dreaming are natural activities that can be disrupted when anxiety and stress have not been stabilised.
