Posted - 10/06/2015 : 1:31:29 PM Hi, I've just come across some information about hypnosis amnesia. My question to professionals is, is this a necessary step? I understand the concept of it scrambling the work so that the conscious mind can not analyse it post hypnosis. I have not come across this in my training, but it interests me. Is it something that you always do? Am I missing a vital part of treatment if I don't do it? Advice welcome

Posted - 10/13/2015 : 11:28:42 PM A few points need to be addressed to understand the meaning of Amnesia in a hypnotic context.
From a technical point of view, - Amnesia in cognitive science and psychology, is a state of mind we should consider synonymous; - to the phenomena of "hypnotic trance."
The definition you are applying, I take it, refers to the intra-trance technique of amnesia, in which the patient "forgets," or "represses" memory. This is sometimes used by hypnotists to "filter" information that may be remembered on re-awaking. (used when the therapist does not want the patient to remember a negative experience during trance, for example.) Alternatively amnesia is used during regression, when the therapist may wish to change the subject's regression from one form to another. The hypnotist may alter the patient's age, for example. They may do something like repress the subject's 4 year old memory of a birthday party, and instead remember the perspective they carry of the event, as an 11 year old. The older self may remember new detials, or provide new perspectives that the younger self failed to pay attention to.
If you are starting out it is more relevant to focus on the methods that will help you to generate effective trance. Even most professionals struggle to reliably generate fully realised hypnotic trances. If you are prepared to devote time to learning, the acquisition of language with which you may "dissociate" awareness, - and a knowledge of the cognitive mechanisms that drive hypnosis, are where you should place your focus. Intra trance phenomena is exciting to think about, but mastering the fundamentals, is the most valuable skill the therapist develops. |
