Posted - 12/26/2013 : 1:11:40 PM So, I'm new to hypnosis. I found it intriguing after watching some youtube videos about hypnosis. Regardless, I'm having a lot of trouble with falling into what I expect should be a trance. I've only listened to audio files on youtube and they all say to just relax and take deep breaths. Okay, I do both of those things. But when ever I feel relaxed and feel any sort of "deepness", I still feel conscious. I hear what the hypnotist says and I can relax myself to their voice- I follow their voice- but I still feel conscious. So whenever they give me a command, such as to raise my arm, I can make a conscious effort to raise or not to raise my arm, yet I feel deep and relaxed. I'm struggling with what I think a trance feels like. So when the hypnotist says "Sleep" and snaps his fingers, nothing changes. I don't even try to force myself into a trance, I just can't reach a point of complete relaxation or blankness in my mind to be able to put myself under. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Now for my eyes. Whenever I start to relax and I close my eyes, everything is normal. But almost immediately after I begin to feel a deep relaxation, my eyes begin to do this weird thing in which they move, but I didn't make a conscious effort to move them. I soon found out that my eyes were crossing themselves and sometimes it gets really uncomfortable, so I'll blink a few times to fix my eyes, but that messes up my relaxation. I don't think this is the root of my trance problems, but it definately isn't helping. I'm curious to know other peoples thoughts or experiences with this irritating issue.
On a side note, I started experimenting with hypnosis because I thought it would be fun, but now that I have a semi-decent understanding of it, I'd eventually like to try self-hypnosis for improving myself when I can get the basics of listening to scripts. I just thought that might be relevant. |

Posted - 09/23/2014 : 11:44:05 AM Self-hypnosis has always been a mystery to me. The mystery being how it works after some practice and recognizing most people are so pinned up inside, it takes several sessions to unlock the deep relaxation that is the foundation of hypnosis. Being a novice and not a professional, my solutions were to keep trying until I was able to step by step induce the state of "hypnosis" ... another words, I kept trying or as the jocks say "practicing." Once you get past a certain gate of entry, it all falls into place. At least it did for me. Good luck, don't try so hard, and keep relaxing. |

Posted - 01/02/2014 : 11:11:51 AM Make sure in future sessions with a Hypnotist you tell them about your eye reaction. They can give you "relaxation of the eyes" suggestion to alleviate that tension. Most Professionals can give you a self hypnosis trigger (holding your fingers a certain way or something like that) which will allow you go into hypnosis on your own and to give yourself helpful suggestions. They should also be able to create the relaxation of your eyes built into those self hypnosis sessions.

Posted - 12/30/2013 : 7:19:43 PM There are two parts to your question, the first is what to expect when going into trance, and the second is about what your eyes are doing when you go into trance. Firstly, everyone is conscious when in hypnosis, so that is normal. Also, when the suggestion to raise your arm is given, it probably needs to be given a number of times for the arms to unconsciously lift. If the hypnotist is just saying it once then making a conscious decision to lift may have been needed in that experience for you. On another day, with another hypnotist it might have been a more dissociated response, but you don't need that to be in hypnosis.
The real telltale sign that you are in hypnosis is your eye moving in the way that they do. This is one of the possible phenomena when someone goes into hypnosis.
In summary, trance is a subjective phenomenological reaction to certain conditions. You can only be curious about what your trance will be like on any given occasion. |
