Are there any ways that I could increase my susceptibility to hypnosis?
Also, does anyone else find it incredibly difficult to control breathing and relax whilst listening to a hypnosis tape?

Suggestibility varies from the high direct to the high indirect, but virtually everyone is suggestible to something.

The direct receivers respond to the direct approach to hypnosis while the indirect receivers respond more readily to indirect methods.

For many years it was thought that only the direct receivers could be hypnotized. There was no known way to hypnotize a person who could not or would not accept a direct suggestion. I think this is waht you are referring to.

If you are a low direct or an indirect receiver you can develop more direct suggestibility (and thus feel that you are more suggestible) with the help of a hypnotherapist trained to do such things.

When I am working with an indirect receiver I begin to create direct suggestibility in the first session.

Don't be put off by others, there are generally two schools of thought when it comes to hypnosis in general. There is one that says that nobody except a trained practictioner should use hypnosis, that irrevocable harm can be caused and so forth.
There is also the other that says that some fact finding, and common sense a person can use hypnosis to help themselves and others, they might not be therapists but they are an amateur practitioner.
First of all, I'm a professional Hypnotherapist with over a dozen years under my belt. However, I started out with an interest in hypnosis as no doubt everyone who entered the field has done. I put people into hypnosis before I was a CHt, in fact before I even entered a class room of any sort.
Hypnosis itself is safe, there can be negative suggestions given and dangers such as False Memories created and such, however bad therapists are just as guilty of this as the amateur hypnotist. I wouldn't 'therapize' if I wasn't a professional, however there are numerous good scripts that an amateur can use such as those to gain confidence, self esteem, memory and a large list of other benefits.
If you want to be able to enter hypnosis more readily, I would suggest that you practice with Self Hypnosis, or have someone work with you. It's like anything else, the more you do it, the better you become.
Don't be put off either, I encourage you to find out more, read as much as you can and ask anything. Hypnosis is something that can enhance your life greatly, and the lives of those around you. Never stop learning.

I never debated the fact that all except the "mentally disturbed" are able to be hypnotised. My question related to susceptibility to hypnosis. As you have just said, different personalities can affect hypnosis because people respond differently and can be more or less open to hypnosis. What I set out to assertain when I posted my original message was whether there was any possible way that variations in hypnosis techniques, preparation for hypnosis etc could increase my PERSONAL level of susceptibility (or openness) and lead to hypnosis having a greater beneficial effect upon me as an individual.

I understand that reading books will not give me a proper training on the complex & interesting world of hypnotherapy but I never expected it to. My intent is not to pursue a career in hypnosis - I merely seek to learn something more about it, not get a university qualification on the subject. I apologise if this is a somehow vile thought for you that leaves me excluded me from your 'we who are serious' club. I really had no idea that this forum was purely for the qualification brandishing experts and that newcomers to the topic weren't welcome.

Some people are more open to hypnosis depending on their personalities, but all except those who are mentally disturbed are able to be hypnotised to one degree or another. There is however no cheap way to go. Reading books is benificial, but will not give you a proper training, you must also have direct contact with a program that includes hands on experience, which means that you need to go to school. We who are serious also take continual courses to keep up with changes and improvements in our art. Like so many, I have spent many hundreds of dollars and countless hours of both study and experimentation in order to stay ahead in both knowledge and skill. If you are smarter than I, you may do it in less time, but many of my friends have spent thousands in training courses, and are still learning. I trained when costs were less, about thirty five years ago, but today it would indeed cost thousands to be at the top in this field, and the rewards are equally great if you have the right personality and skill to operate your own business. This is not a field for the faint at heart. Terry

I thought that the beneficial effect of a hypnosis session and susceptibility to it varies depending on the brain of the individual being hypnotised. Is this wrong? Do conditions such as Autism, which cause an individual's brain to work differently from the majority of people, not cause changes in the person's ability to be hypnotised?

As you can probably tell, I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject of hypnosis but I am fascinated to learn. Can you recommend any good reading material on the subject?

You are asking the wrong question. Everyone is suseptible to hypnosis, you are taking the wrong aproach. Tapes are cheap, but the failure rate is high, and you have no recourse when they fail except to question if hypnosis works.......If it is important to learn hypnosis, be willing to pay for a course locally, or visit a practitioner for the purpose of finding out how to use this art properly. If not, stop wasting your time playing with it, hypnosis is a powerful form of therapy when properly used, but dangerous when used improperly. Sadly there are plenty of con artists to take your money in return for tapes that have a high failure rate. Terry
