Posted - 08/06/2011 : 9:26:25 PM I suffer from the obsessive-compulsive disorder, but I only have a problem with the "obsessions" part. In short, unwanted, obsessive, nonsensical thoughts that I am incapable of getting rid of.
So, I've had 5-6 sessions with this female hypnotherapist, in an effort to treat the illness.
She claims that we have made significant progress, and I believed that for awhile (and still try to, to some extent), but there are several issues that are bothering me and making me feel not-so-confident about the success of the therapy. And that's why I am starting this thread.
Here is the deal. In none of the sessions, I did not feel anything "special" while I was supposedly in hypnosis. Stay with me, I'll explain what I mean in a moment. For example, when we were looking for the root cause of the illness, she told me that my sub-consciousness would show me an image or a film of the event that caused it. Yet nothing happened. I just thought about the possible causes, and uttered the first one that came into my mind. And there was no "film", nothing I experienced there seemed any different from normal visualization that occurs in a non-hypnotic state.
Perhaps this is normal? I asked my therapist about it, and she was quite ambiguous in her response. After the session, she asked me if I was "fascinated" with what I experienced. This would strongly suggest that she expected me to experience something extraordinary, and that did not happen.
Furthermore, none of the various tests, such as arm getting heavier, forgetting my name, forgetting a random number, worked. This, coupled with the previous fact, makes me very skeptical as to how efficient the sessions have been.
So two questions. First, what I have written above. Second, if the sessions have indeed failed, what could I possibly be doing wrong, and how could I fix it?

Posted - 10/08/2012 : 4:30:20 PM If you are seeing a hypnotherapist and need to come onto this forum for reassurance something is wrong. Sometimes progress can also be an increase in disturbance if you have a block and your sessions are getting close to it. But you should have had this explained to you and you must be able to talk it through with your therapist. Perception can distort things so I don't want to criticise. |

Posted - 09/27/2011 : 11:04:23 AM It appears you do not have rapport with your therapist. This is the basic element she must create with you. Hard to help you identify if you feel uncertain about the person assisting you to identify.
"I've had 5-6 sessions"- She claims that we have made significant progress-she told me that my sub-consciousness would show me an image or a film of the event that caused it." You should have expectations of significant change with 5-6 sessions. She can claim, but only You know. Everyone is different you could be kinesthetic..feeling or sensing rather than visual...you may be auditory. It's her responsibility to identify your learning modality and use that knowledge to help you identify cause and effect or perhaps just help you to create a change. IMHO your therapist needs additional training. If she is observing you while working with you she KNOWS if you had experienced something extraordinary! She is ambiguous because she is not in sync with you and has absolutely no idea of who or what you are or how you feel. And I'm sorry to say, has perhaps wasted much of your money and time. Not to say anything about casting doubt on hypnosis as an effective therapeutic tool to help you to create change. After 10 years in this business, I will honestly tell you not always do client & therapist have rapport. But it is the therapist's responsibility to identify this to the client & not continue to take their money.
You did not fail...there is no pass or fail in a therapeutic session. And it was her obligation to ensure you knew this going in... especially with OCD..the #1 perfectionist disorder.
"tests" are given in school not in a therapeutic session....IMHO. She used "convincers" and they didn't convince you. If you must look at it as pass or fail, your therapist failed you. You have the problem... she had the toolbox...
I would recommend you look into a different hypnotist |

Posted - 08/07/2011 : 6:16:43 PM My opinion may be unfair to the hypnotist... she may have another side to this story. But:
Ok, assessing it subjectively (your perspective) is the only way to do it anyway. OCD can be complex to quantify.. is it one behavior or a set of behaviors? Are the symptoms being exacerbated by emotional stress, Medication side effects, etc?
Generally I'll have a client rate their overall severity/intensity of symptoms on a scale of 1 to 10 before we start working. Then check their subjective rating each session to gauge results.
To be working on symptoms for 6 sessions w/o the client knowing if they see results is a bit on the long side... Typically, if I don't have results within two sessions, I know something is not right. And, I will NOT put my opinion of a client's results ahead of the client's OWN opinion....
In regards to the "testing" (arm catalepsy, suggested amnesia)it is not 100% reliable from client to client. But, I feel it's the hypnotists job to discuss this with the client and establish realistic expectations. The client should NOT be left guessing about this stuff.
In regards to the "age regression"/memory work... from your description, it sounds like she is using a fairly passive technique. This tends to give the client more time to "think" about the answer (conscious interference) and reduces accuracy as well as reducing the chance of a successful outcome.
Age regression techniques, when done correctly, should be giving notable results in three sessions at the VERY most! This is an advanced technique and needs quality training and experience to do correctly.
What are YOU doing wrong? Not a thing. You're following your hypnotist as well as possible and are now researching to help you (and her) achieve YOUR improvement.
You are paying her to do this stuff. The hypnotist's job is to train/educate the client. If you find out what you need to in order to make her sessions productive, are you going to charge her for the education? |

I assess improvement by examining if I still have the symptoms of OCD. My hypnotist, I suppose, does so by asking me if I felt any improvement.
And, I suppose that from this, the natural question that follows is if I felt any improvement. And I am not sure. I definitely still have the symptoms, but I am not sure if they are any less intense than when I started the therapy.

But, I'd like to ask a question first -
