I was wondering if anyone here could enlighten me about something I witnessed a few years back. I've been curious about it ever since. That's why I did a search, which led me to this site.
Anyway, I was at this seminar on the powers of the mind, or some such, conducted by a pretty blonde lady dressed completely in red. The whole thing was a little New Agey. My then-girlfriend was into that sort of thing, so I went along.
At one point she was discussing hypnosis, and said that it was possible to hypnotize someone without saying a word.
She asked for a volunteer and a rather attractive woman, maybe 5 or 6 years younger, stepped forward. She had the woman sit in a chair, facing the group. She suggested she remove her shoes, leaving her barefoot, and told her to just relax.
She stood in front of the woman and bent forward, I presume staring into her eyes. (I could only see the back of her head.)
She also took the woman's right hand and began rubbing it while she was doing this, which seemed really odd. But she never looked away from the woman at all.
The woman's eyes began closing gradually and after a certain point she looked to be deeply asleep, with her head down to the side. It seemed to take maybe a couple of minutes. Again, not a word was spoken.
The hypnotist then raised the woman's arm so she was sitting there, seemingly asleep, with her arm raised over her head.
The hypnotist brought her out of it by rubbing her hand again.
I never saw anything like it. How did she pull it off? Was it staged or was the subject just very suggestible? And what did all the hand rubbing have to do with it? I'd greatly appreciate anyone's input on the subject. Thank you. |

Some people when they are told they are going to be Hypnotized will go right into trance. Some are more susceptible than others. Many who have been hypnotized before and "love" the feeling will go into it with only the mention that it is going to happen and then a snap of the fingers or a tug on the arm - it is done.
Some videos can be edited and Staged Shows can be... "staged." Some entertainers like to blur the lines between Magic and Hypnosis. After all in that context it is a show. The magician did not saw the woman in half although it really looked like it. Some of the best Stage Hypnotists can locate the susceptible people in the audience by hypnotizing everyone in the group and looking for the signs of those in trance. This requires a lot of experience in knowing what to look for. Many in the group will pretend to be under hypnosis just to take part in the show - somewhere between those pretenders and a few people in real trance - a pro can make a fun show of it. The good ones always seem to take the time to also educate the audience about clinical Hypnosis. |

How to interpret this is dependent on your concept of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural state. People go in and out of hypnosis all the time. If a woman was gently stroking my hand while she was staring at me, after telling in me I was going to go into hypnosis, no doubt I would. Staring and stroking the hand induces trance. The idea of being hypnotised would assist in the eyes closing and giving permission to deeply relax. If the women fell asleep, well that's a bonus for her. Not as difficult as you're perceiving it to be. Give it a go with someone! |

I've asked other professionals about this incident. Some say it's actually possible to hypnotize someone in this manner. Others say it isn't and it was all just a show.
The more I think about it, the more I think it was real. She didn't go under right away like you might see with typical stage hypnosis, where someone snaps their fingers and the person's instantly "under."
This took a few minutes, and her eyes closed very gradually. Her whole face gradually went slack, like she was actually falling asleep. It definitely looked natural. And it looked like she had been asleep for hours. Even after she seemed completely under, her eyes were still open ever so slightly, and you could just make out the whites of her eyes, like someone just on the verge of falling asleep on the couch or something. I don't know how you fake that. The hypnotist then placed her palm over the woman's eyes, fully closing them.
And then with her arm raised over her head while she looked asleep.
It was definitely one of the most unusual things I ever noticed. I guess what also made it pretty cool was that these were both attractive women. Something strangely erotic about the whole thing... |

There is probably no limit to the ways we can hypnotise someone. It is a joint process involving both the hypnotist and the subject. I have hypnotised someone by stroking their hand and holding them with a gaze. It is not that difficult. It won't work on everyone. Nothing does. But it is perfectly legitimate. Try it on your children. They are the easiest to hypnotise and they will find it quite soothing. Hypnosis always looks amazing from the outside and difficult to believe, but in actual fact it works and is really quite straight forward.
People often come to me in disbelief that hypnosis will work on them. However, while the session may not be what they thought it would be, they are usually amazed at how it does actually work.

I wonder if women, in general, are more susceptible to this type of suggestion. Maybe less guarded, more open? Again, generally speaking.
And maybe it's easier with another woman doing it. Less threatening than a man 6 inches away staring them in the eyes. Just a thought... |

I think the hand stroking might be more acceptable to a women that a man.
