Hypnosis for My Spouse
We get this question all the time and hopefully discussing it here may be helpful for those who have a similar situation.
Question:
“Do you happen to know of any Hypnotherapists that use hypnosis to cure their patients of gambling (or smoking, drugs, etc.) addictions? Or do you sell any products that will be effective in this area? I am trying to secure assistance for my husband (spouse) and I heard that clinical hypnosis has successfully aided other people with this problem.”
Answer:
First of all let me just say that Hypnosis does not “cure” anyone. Hypnotherapists are not Doctors and they do not cure any diseases.
Next - as much as you want to help your husband, Hypnosis will not help him unless he wants to be helped. In almost every case where a spouse purchases Hypnosis (sessions or audio programs) for their mate it is in the hopes of modifying behavior - but if the other person does not want to have that behavior modified then it is a guarantee that the Hypnosis will not work. We get so many people who come in for sessions (or audio programs) because their spouse wants them to stop (smoking, drinking, eating, etc.) but in truth they have not made the personal decision themselves. They are doing it "for" the other person to “show” they are willing to try anything to quit for them - but this is not a good situation. Until that personal commitment has been made (and they are doing it for themselves) then Hypnosis will be totally ineffective. And in fact, these people will get a boost to their own internal argument saying things like "I even tried Hypnosis and couldn't quit..." This actually makes their addiction stronger by reinforcing the fact that they are not responsible when in fact we all know they are.
Many times just the fact that person spends their own money on the program will change the outcome. So if you want to try hypnosis - make your spouse purchase the sessions (audio programs) themselves. Make them do the entire process of researching and deciding which form of Hypnosis they want to try.
In most cases, like stop smoking for example, we charge a lot more money for this than any other session - the reason is, people tend to put a lot of effort behind anything they have to pay for - and if it is really expensive they almost have to make it work so they do not waste the money. If they really know they will not quit they will never lay out that kind of money knowing it is going to be wasted. They will find some excuse to not pay it. Of course expensive is different for different people. So spending $500 or so to make a "showing" for the spouse that they are trying, may not be that much for someone who doesn't consider that a lot of money.
For some people the time (not the money) involved is the key factor. Getting them to invest time into the sessions may have a better overall effect than any amount of money. This works well on very wealthy individuals.
Should your spouse really want to alter the behavior then they should be the one seeking the treatment - they should make the decision as to which process to use and pay for the process themselves. Any other way of doing it will only do the exact opposite of what you are trying to do - that is, to bolster their belief in their own inability to end the behavior or give them a way to "show you" they tried but in the end "just cannot be helped."
I hope this makes sense and helps. I know it is probably not the answer you are hoping for but it is fact. It also does Hypnosis a disservice as these people walk around telling everyone that Hypnosis doesn't work just because they never wanted it to work.
Here are some ways to get your spouse into considering Hypnosis on their own:
Have them look over the FAQs about Hypnosis: http://HypnosisOnline.com/faqs
Just get them to browse the site and let them consider the idea and decide to proceed. You can encourage them but if they don't proceed on their own then - it is doubtful that it will be of any use in your case.
If they like the idea (and with your encouragement) are interested in trying it out. Look over the following item: http://HypnosisOnline.com/custom_audio.htm
Or generic programs like these: http://HypnosisOnline.com/audio_series.asp
These are less expensive way to test out the process see if they are comfortable with it - right in your own home. If this seems to have a good lasting effect then you may want to proceed to use a local Hypnotherapist who is in your area of the world. For most high end problems (smoking, gambling, weight loss, drug addiction, etc.) it is best to have multiple one-on-one Hypnosis sessions with a professional to get to the personal nature of these issues which is almost always different with every individual.
