Is hypnosis real, or is it a kind of self con job?

I mean--is there really such a thing as an altered state of consciousness where a pin could be stuck in your hand, and you wouldn't feel it, or is that just in the movies?

And what about post-hypnotic suggestions?

I've seen people do stupid things, or seem to nod off when the hypnotist said some trigger word, but that could be faked (or they could just be playing along without even knowing it.)

Can hypnosis actually have an effect on involuntary body functions?

Could a volunteer really be made to sneeze, or pass gas when they hear a trigger word, or is that just a myth?

Is there anything at all to "mind over matter," and does hypnosis provide any evidence for it?

I just read this article yesterday about this very thing. Yes it works. Yes it can be silly or miraculous. It functions on both small and large scales, from self confidence to unanesthetized surgery.

I know for a fact that hypnotism is real. However, not all people are equally susceptible to it. I personally saw people do and say things that they never would have been capable of. I never would have believed it if I hadn't witnessed it first hand.
