Posted - 02/12/2015 : 09:41:43 AM I am a student at HMI currently studying Law and Ethics. I understand that we, as hypnotherapist, can legally work with clients helping them with vocational and avocational self-improvement. I also understand that if we want to help outside of this area we need a referral from either a M.D., PSY, or D.D.S.. I also understand that looking in the DSM-V we can obtain detailed descriptions of psychological problems that if we were to treat these we would need a referral from a PSY. What is not so clear to me is what conditions would require a referral from a M.D.. For example if a client comes in expressing desire to be helped with a pain problem, sleep problem, etc and you feel, key word here feel, that it is not caused by a medical problem you could be mistaken as you do not have education of a M.D. therefore you think they are just experiencing work related stress which you can help with. |

Posted - 02/13/2015 : 2:58:21 PM That is part of the issue - the whole thing is rather a grey area. Something as straight forward as weight loss could easily be called a "medical condition." I think the best rule of thumb is to not have a session with anyone who is currently seeing an M.D./ PSY for the same issue. Anyone who is under treatment elsewhere or if they are on any medication for the issue. Unless of course if the M.D. / PSY approves the sessions. In some cases Hypnosis will be welcomed by the M.D./ PSY if they do not provide hypnotherapy themselves and they may even refer some of their other clients to you. |

Posted - 02/13/2015 : 1:53:19 PM Yes I think this info is great. I plan to be a member of the AFL-CIO following graduation. I have had a course with the California union president presenting. I still have a hard time understanding how one can tell if a problem is caused by a medical condition or not particularly since I do not have an education in medicine from which to evaluate the problem. |

Posted - 02/13/2015 : 10:30:52 AM I plan to have a practice in Wisconsin and Michigan. It seems Florida has tried to address this issue in legislation but has not yet been successful. |
