I am going to start hypnotherapy sessions with a psychoanalist/ hypnotist in order to stop smoking. She wants to work on other things as well. Durring my consultation session, I did not expect to be put under without being told so. We were simply having a discussion about my life, and the therapist simply asked me a question, and next thing i knew, i was semi- out of it, and was staring deeply into her eyes, in what i can only call a semi trance. I told myself "im being hypnotized right now, and didnt want to be under hypnosis, so i pulled myself out of it by looking away from her eyes. Is this normal? For a hypnotist to be able to put you under by simply asking the right question? This happened out of no where, in the middle of a conversation. I wasnt even told i was going to be put under hypnosis. Does this mean i am easy to hypnotize. Also if i am put under hypnosis, what is the likelyhood of my saying things that I do not want to say. I do not want to be an open book for someone I dont know. I simply want to get rid of bad habits, not be investigated without my permission. Is it possible to be totally unaware and have no control of yourself durring hypnosis. What can i do to make sure i am in control of myself durring hypnosis.

Thanks for your help on this one

And another person can, of course, match your rhythm of speech and the rhythm of your breathing, and then, once in sync with you ... just being ... to slow it down ... gradually ... perhaps, unnoticeably at first ... and you just find yourself ... slowing down ... and going deeper ... your thoughts drifting ... into some fantasy ... that makes you feel so good ... and so comfortable ... and you just become so deeply involved ... in that pleasant fantasy ... that you forget everything ... about the world around you ... and find yourself hypnotized ...

And I suppose that all of us want to feel good and some people may feel even grateful for the experience ... people may want to resist feeling bad ... but most people would just allow themselves to surrender to those feelings of safety, pleasure and comfort ... because when you are experiencing hypnosis you can often find that the deeper you go the better you feel ... so you just find yourself wanting to go deeper and deeper ... and enjoying the whole experience as much as you can ...

And if someone elicited those feelings of comfort, safety and well-being within you, just like that ... causing you to drift deeper and deeper and feel even better ... would you think he took advantage of you ... or forced you to be hypnotized against your will ...

Of course you can resist feeling good, if you really want to ... on conscious level ... while your unconscious thoroughly enjoys the experience and pulls you deeper and deeper inside ...

Many times while doing a preliminary session a Hypnotherapist will test to see the clients susceptibility to trance and it is not uncommon to have a client who is very easily hypnotized go into trance during the tests.

Sometimes when a client tells the Hypnotherapist that they continue to have some behavior due to another issue then the Hypnotherapist may suggest an alternative path to accomplish the final desired result. For example; someone who smokes because they fear gaining weight when they stop smoking. In this case, maybe weight gain therapy should be handled first then smoking.

Bottom line we do not have enough information here to really assess either the client or Hypnotherapist. I am sure the Hypnotists side of this meeting would read differently.

you went to see a hypnotherapist and were surprised at being hypnotised ??
if have a few drinks tonight dont be at all surprised if you get drunk !!
but seriously you could not have been made to say or do anything against your wishes, this point should always be explained to new clients anyhow.
maybe some hypnotherapist take it for granted folk know this or just dont take the trouble to put a clients fears to rest, which will also make for a more productive outcome.

Yes, this is common with Ericksonian Hypnosis, which is essentially purely conversational and doesn't have to have any formal inductions.
After all, even in daily life, we go just like that in and out of trance when something we hear, see, smell, etc. stimulates our imagination and turns our focus inward, perhaps triggering some association from the past.

I have heard of other hypnotists who did actually do a complete hypnosis session without telling clients they'd be hypnotised (come to think of it, if you don't know it's coming, it's unlikely you'll resist the suggestions) and some of these clients also got quite upset that they were unexpectedly hypnotised.

And, not everyone that uses this kind of hypnosis is a professional hypnotist - some people are salesmen, some are lawyers, some practice seduction skills on unaware suspects - and that's just the beginning.

Hi there.

I read your post and in the first part you stated, "SHE wants to work on other things..." or something like that.

Hey, if you go to a therapist and say, "I want to quit smoking," then that is what they should work on with you. YOU ARE THE BOSS in there. Right off the bat, I don't agree with this therapist's approach with you. I have been a therapist for 16 years and I practice my craft within a code of ethics that says "the client is treated with dignity and respect... the client has the right to self determination... the client has the right to be informed of all therapeutic interventions prior to them being used..." and much more. If I cannot be held accountable, then why should a client trust me?

I personally would seek help elsewhere. Number one, she has other things in mind to work on with you and all you wanted was to quit smoking and number two, you were under the impression of being in an assessment and not for the trance work to begin. There are good therapists out there who will "partner" with you as you work on whatever issues you choose, not the therapist choosing for you. YOU ARE THE BOSS! YOU ARE IN CONTROL!

Even when those eyes are seeming to do things, they are only eyes of another person. YOU GIVE THEM MEANING. Hypnotherapists do not have magic powers. We are simply trained in methods of communication that help guide the subject/client to a state of suggestability. An ethical therapist will have done an assessment and will only suggest in hypnosis what YOU WANT TO HAVE HAPPEN. Please remember that. You are always in control, unless you give that control away. Be careful.

Check out the credentials of the therapist you want to see. Many of us are trained to help you stop smoking in one session, two tops and the second is mainly to follow up and make sure that everything that needed to be done in the first session was done. I have helped over 100 people quit and stay quit (including myself... 2 packs a day!) I am now and have been a non-smoker since 1990. One session is usually all that is needed. Now, if you choose to work on other things, then of course other sessions are warrented, or if you wanted something more than just to quit smoking, then I can see why several sessions would be needed.

I hope this helped. It is already October, so you may have solved everything by now. Good luck in the future!

Could we have a little more of your personal history so that a greater understanding of the problem can be attained
Terry Posted - 08/14/2003 : 6:17:07 PM
Can this be done? Yes, but it is NOT common practise I hope, since a client has the right to accept hypnosis or not, and should be warned in most cases. However, I was not present, and have no knowledge of why it might have seemed nescessary to conlude the trance without warning, so I can't comment on the ethics of what occured. However, if you are not comfortable with this person, you should refuse any future contact without an explanation of WHY since suspicions will negate a good result. On the other hand, you did go to her for the purpose of being hypnotised, so she is entitled to the benifit of the doubt regarding her reason for acting in this manner. It may be that she feels superior, and has no need to consult you, but it may also be that she saw a problem and nipped it in the bud, so ask. Did you ask for help regarding other problems, or did she suggest that there might be others? Terry

No I was not in Awe of the therapist. I was not expecting to be hypnotized durring the session. I thought we were just doing an assessment and suddenly, I was out of it, after she changed her voice pattern and started speaking softer. I realized what was going on while this was taking place and I pulled myself out of it. She even stated later that we did a little hypnosis earlier in the session.

Could it be that you were in AWE of the hypnotist and actually hypnotised yourself.
At all times you would have been in control and had an adverse suggestion been offered you would have snapped out of the trance immediately
